You do have to have a chat membership, but that's also no charge.

All I need to know are the chat nicknames of your group members and what you want the chat room to be called (the chat room name can be anything that isn't gross/obscene).

It's not that I want to discourage talking about the projects here on the forums or in world -- the benefits to having a private chat room are:

1) transcripts. because not all group members will always be able to be in world at the same time. the chat transcripts allow persons C & E to catch up on what A & B & D discussed.

2) some privacy. so some aspects of your project planning can remain secret until the unveiling.

3) no need to give away your email address to join a short-term email group to discuss these things

I've been keeping the chat up 24/7 the last few days instead of the "during SL off hours only". As far as I can see this hasn't caused me any problems, so I see no reason to change this any time soon. (** see the OT post I'll be making in General in a few minutes)
