Buy land that includes water area, for example, cosatal land on a lakeshore. You can make and place a stationary boat on the water's surface and live in it as readily as you can place a house on land.

For movable boats, again, but some land with water on it, preferably beside a large inland lake. Build yourself a small dock to mark your own area. Use that dock as your 'home'. You can rez boat vehicles on your piece of water, and can then navigate them from there onto the larger body of Linden-owned water.

I'm designing an anchorage for a customer right now. A lovely building on the water's edge, with docks for her collection of water vehicles, and access to a linden-owned collection of all-water sims.

Note: Right now, I would personally avoid buying land on the outer edges of continents, as those sometimes get more land added to them, removing water access. The Lindens are revamping the mainland coastline right now, which will undoubatably eliminate water access for a number of properties that are at this time on straight sim-edge coastlines. The shores of large inland lakes are more likely to remain stable, in my opinion.

I have an island among a collection of 4 other islands in one group. 3 of the islands are beach motiff with plenty of water. I have 2 4096 plots available for rent at 8k a month ( ehn payed bi-weekly) or 7500 a month when renting a month at a time.
one of teh plots has its own bay and it can also be modified to suit your needs.
Look at my profile in world and I think I have a pic that points to Kaunu Isle.
IF you have any questions dont hesitate to ask

I'm not tier, so I don't own land but I do have my own boat that I live on.

I joined Bear's Marinas, and rented a private slip from him for my 110' motor boat. It wasn't cheap, but I get my own place that I can move around if I get bored of the scenery. I wanted a place to be called my own, but I wasn't ready (and still aren't) to put down the cash for a full account.

Drop me an IM in-world if you're interested in learning more.
