Thanks C Yes, this is the right track. However, in addition to covering the ceiling with prims, you wil probably also want some prims on the walls. Stretched out land does not look very cavewall like. There are also some tricks to make it dark, such as hanging dark, almost transparent, phantom drapes across the cave, but these can cause other problems with clicking on items.

Yes, you're on the right track.
Caves in SL are all open-topped pits or trenches in the terrain. You then cover at least the top, and usually also the sides and floor, with prims.
Phantom sculpties could make great cave roof and reasonable wall effects. I'd stick with regular prims for floors, as walking normally on non-phantom sculpties is somewhere between difficult and impossible, because the collisin box doesn't match the surface shaep of a sculpty. If you use phantom sculpties for walls, you'll still need normal prims inside the sculpty to act as a barrier.

If you want to see a big cave in SL, look at Caribbean Escapes (150, 96, 6 . Find the big waterfall that is just below that point, and there's a place on the right side of the first bend in the falls where you can enter what was originally caled Nohona caverns. I built those caves.
