some things look like hell under the current lighting setup, so I am curious.. is there a way to brighten a texture partially without going to full bright?

Adding glow will brighten a texture without giving it 'full bright.' Try very low settings at first.

Maybe you could try a layering effect to achieve this...how about placing a prim under the main prim, making the top prim 'full bright' and then drop the transparency on it? This way you have a 'lit' effect, but it's not too dramatic. Fiddle with the color of the underlying prim and the top prims transparency level. Just an idea.

You could also try messing with alpha textures and full bright. Creating alphas that are slightly transparent originally, and then adding full bright and a touch of glow?

Good luck.

The new lighting can indeed mess up the looks of things you build pretty badly. So when texturing/painting something, make very sure to check things on different time settings.
At times, the lighting can work to your advantage as well though. I've started using much brighter colors lately, precisely because they catch lighting better.
Oh, and objects where red is the dominant color, even if it's only slightly seem to suffer way less from the new lighting. Pretty obvious of course, with both sunrise and sunset being slightly red-dominant as well. But it might help you anyway :)
