I finally cracked it. Importing from Vectorworks into SL.

I know we have the Blender import, but as an Architects I love to be able to create our models from our initial drawings rather than exporting them.

It started from the thought; "wouldnt it be great to be able to walk round a project with the client, looking at spaces and discussing them together with them being anywhere in the world....". The system uses a customised workspace and only using Vectorworks objects. A SL plugin for each prim type will be developed in due course.

The great excitement about the process developed is that in theory objects should be able to be exported from SL into Vectorworks, and hence into other packages such as Blender-it should be able to export directly into Blender, but I dont know enough about the scripting language for Blender to achieve this-yet....

Sounds great, I am currently an architecture student at the university of Edinburgh UK, and am writing a thesis on the use of Second Life as a new environment for Architects to prosper, as well as helping with RL situations. I was wondering whether you could be able to export a model from Microstation?? Is there a special scripting code that has to be used, maybe VRML?

Also if anyone has an interest in the academic fields with relation to the use of second life, would be great to here your thoughts.

All the best

Importing from Microstation

As with any importing into SL, it is the type of building block that is used that matters really, not the language. If an interface is used that mirrors the SL prims then you have a chance of exporting that information. Ive never used Microstation, but I can hardly believe it cant be done, as long as that rule is applied
