Potato Chip Shape

Hello all, I was wondering if there is some way to torture a prim into a potato chip shape (I'm making a bowler style hat, but want the sides curved up, like in the attached picture). I've tried smushing prims together, but that doesn't get the curved edges like I want.

Would anyone have any ideas or suggestions about how to accomplish this?

I'd say play with a torus, twisted and tapered, then cut into quarters and flipped, four prims for the brim, then take another torus, cut in half length-wise and stretched to fit, the hole size set to small, to get that rounded edge at the top. Flatten a cylinder and place to fit for the very top and boom, you got it. For the band, copy the body torus and flatten it a bit, then make larger by one or two clicks.

You can do it with series of cut cylinders, each one tapered and skewed to an increasing degree from the last. It will be prim-heavy, of course, and it's difficult to explain in words without writing a full-blown lengthy tutorial, but the shape can be made.

you can do it with a torus.. IF you have a circular (alpha'd) texture....

(normally I would apply a transparent texture to the other faces, but for this demonstration, it seems important to leave the edge showing)

Can't make it "thick" though.

Can't make it "thick" though.
Could use an intersecting alpha'd vertical cylinder to make the "edge"... but alpha sorting would probably kill the effect. :(

Thanks so much for the replies (especially Winter's mini tutorial!). I'll go play a bit with the alpha, but I suspect for a hat, the thin brim thing might not look that good. I might go with the "suggestion" of a turned up brim using built up prims instead. If I keep it black, the joins might not look too bad.

You could try both.. Making the potato chip shape (above) and then playing with toruses to make a rolled edge. Then you can 'make it thick" by using less hollow, and use the torii to help complete the illusion.
