Search for Ivory Tower in Search > Places and follow the step by step tutorial there for a *very* good kick start into building. There are also free building and scripting classes at New Citizens Plaza. Avatar templates are only good for materials directly painted on the avatar (ie. skin, clothes, eyes, hair, etc.).
