From the prerelease patch notes for 1.7.4:
'First, we have changed the default texture for objects with unloaded textures. We've added a hard edge to the default texture so that residents can tell it is there even if the real texture has not yet loaded.'
I sure hope this doesn't affect invisaprims, which takes advantage of an 'unloaded texture' to give us our hack that allows us to 'hide' the default avvie for use in custom avatars.
If it does.... there's going to be hundreds of outraged avatar creators....

a workaround?

Templar Botworks uses a "crumple up the avatar" pose to hide the avatar inside the robot; however, this makes it armless and legless which may not be appropriate for birds. On the other hand, the invisiprim hack often looks like a cloaked Romulan ship - particularly in front of alpha textures.
I almost feel silly suggesting this to THE Psyra, but I've seen non-humanoid avatars come with very distorted body shapes that are made to fit entirely inside the prim AV, have you tried that?

It's not only avatars, what about shoes?

It's such a difficult thing here in SL... getting the balance right. It's almost like a Depeche Mode song or something! We've got features, bugs, bugs that are used as features thanx to the creative intervention of Resis, etc. In any instance, if this breaks invisiprims, I do believe that as SL is constantly in motion and seeing what's already happened, a fix will be enacted shortly. So I'm looking forward to the longterm. MAH MELONJAY NOR MAH SHOESIES BETTAH NOT BE BROKEN FO-EVAH!

From: Psyra Extraordinaire 'First, we have changed the default texture for objects with unloaded textures. We've added a hard edge to the default texture so that residents can tell it is there even if the real texture has not yet loaded.' Taken at face value: first, objects that are loading don't appear like invisiprims, they have a smokey appearance. Are you sure this is the same default texture you're thinking of? Second, if this is just a change to the texture... it seems to me that simply changing the scale and offset to move the texture edge off the prim would solve this problem.

If you are using the old invisiprim texture keys this update will probably break it. I believe there are several of these that produce the cloudy "texture loading" effect ("b8d3965a-ad78-bf43-699b-bff8eca6c975" is one such texture key). I don't think most people use these for their invisiprims anymore.
The free invisiprim script which Beatfox distributes (and which most people are using now) does not rely on this effect. It creates a mostly clear invisibility effect that is not cloudy like the older versions of the script because it does not use an "unloadable texture" hack.
This newer invsiprim (which I'm sure you are using Psyra as I have seen your wonderful avatars) uses an exploit in the renderer via a linear gradient texture, not the "unloaded texture" exploit. As such, most content creators who rely on the invisiprims for their creations have nothing to worry about.

My invisiprim script actually alternates between 2 gradient textures with this property, to work around a bug (bug of a bug? heh) that can sometimes cause the invisiprim to hide all textured objects, alpha or not. But yes, it does not use the cloudy "texture loading" texture.
