I am currently in linux so I can't see the menus but there is a setting that says select only my objects. So if you click in the area it will not select the other object. You can also change it to only select my objects and then do an area select. That is where you hold the mouse button down and make a transparent selection area. That way you don't have to just click on your item.
Try looking for that and see if it helps.

What Hiro said will certainly work (the option he was referring to is in the Tools menu), but you could also just move the camera inside the big object so that you can see the little on. Hold down alt and then click & hold the left mouse button. Whatever you clicked on is now the camera's pivot piont. Move the mouse while holding the button and you'll see your point of view move around the object. If you click & hold on the big object you're talking about, you'll be able to swing the camera right through it and you'll be able to see your little object so you can click on it. It takes a little practice, but in my opinion camera control is the most important thing to master in SL or any other 3D application.

Here's a run-down of the camera movement controls. As you can see, it's all about alt, ctrl, and/or shift, along with the left mouse button. For each of these, hold the left mouse button along with the other mentioned keys:

For mouse up & down movement
alt = zoom in or out
alt + ctrl = orbit cameara up or down around pivot point
alt + ctrl + shift = move camera up or down

For mouse left & right movement
alt = orbit camera left or right around pivot point
alt + ctrl = orbit camera left or right around pivot point (same as with just alt)
alt + ctrl + shift = move the camera left or right

Use these key combinations for just a day or two, & they bocome second nature. You'll only have to think about it for like maybe a day before it just becomes habit. After that you'll find yourself constantly moving your camera around as naturally as you might turn your head in the real world.
