advanced sculpt exporter for maya question

When I export sculpted prims using the advanced exporter that should put the scene together in SL, the parts always come out far away from each other. I tried using different options in the exporter and making my stuff smaller in maya, but it hasn't worked. Am I doing something wrong that isn't mentioned in the wiki page, or is this just a bug?

I haven't had a chance to play with in-world reconstruction thingy yet, but one thing I do know you should do in Maya before running the exporter is freeze transformations on all your objects and delete all their construction histories. If you haven't been doing that, then that might be your problem.

I haven't but I did, and it doesn't seem to have any effect on it at all.

Edit: It didn't do that until I did what you said, so I guess that's one step.

I just found that it at least exports the parts at the right size, so I can put them together manually. That's fine for what I'm doing right now, which is 3 prims, but I'm planning stuff that I'll need a bit more for.

I have been using Maya for a couple of years to create items for use with Poser. I can create NURBs etc - but how do I export them for SL? I keep seeing reference to an 'exporter' but have not seen any links as to where to find this thing.

Anyone who can shed some light on this will be forever my hero, :-)

:( I am not completely stupid - that is the first place I looked, but I can't see it listed there. The only Maya related link I see leads to a tutorial that stops at exactly that bit of information.

Please can anyone tell me where the actual exporter is?

Yay, found it - the link was not at all where I thought it would be.

*shuts up and goes off to play quietly*

I'm glad you found what you were looking for, but what was with that first reply? No one called you stupid. No one attacked you at all. The only response you were given was one of pure and utter helpfulness, nothing else. So what was the point of getting all defensive like that?

Since you chose to responded as you did though, I'm left to question, if I really did want to raise the question of stupidity here, what would I talk about? I can think of a few things.

For starters, I might point out the folly of snapping at those who are trying to help you. People who are not "stupid" do appreciate the value of at least appearing grateful for attempted help, even if they're not really the grateful sort on the inside, as appearing grateful generally yields better results than appearing ungrateful.

Second, I might ask you to consider why, if you'd already been to the wiki page, you didn't say so in the first place. People who are not "stupid" do realize that it's not possible for others to know what they have or haven't read unless they've told them, after all.

If I really wanted to get into it, I'd probably ask you to question whether or not it could be considered "stupid" for someone who's read the same thing as everyone else to have failed to absorb the same information as everyone else. That would seem to fit the classic definition, would it not?

Also, I'd probably mention that it might seem a bit "stupid" for someone to claim they've read something in detail when in fact they most likely only just glanced at it the first time around.

I'm not gonna do any of that though. ...Because I don't think you're stupid. Having a frustrating day, maybe, but not stupid.

What I am gonna say is simply tht I think you would do well to broach requests for help with a bit less attitude and a little more explanation of what you're trying to ask for (and some semblance of gratitude would be nice too). Instead of snapping back with all that "I'm not stupid" stuff, how about something polite like this:

"Thanks for taking the time to reply. The fact that you went out of your way to try to answer my question when you could simply have ignored it was very nice of you. Unfortunately however, I've already been to the page in your link and I wasn't able to find the answer I needed. So let me explain exactly what I need to know, and maybe you can tell me what I'm missing. Clearly everyone else has found the information, so maybe there's some part of the page I'm just not seeing? Can you please elaborate? Thanks again. Looking forward to your reply."

Wouldn't that have made more sense?

That's just a bit off topic, and in his defense, he said he wasn't completely stupid, not that he was stupid. Maybe he skimmed wiki page, as I sometimes to, and skipped over it. Heck, I skimmed the page on the advanced exporter at first. After having this issue, though, I read through it a few times to make sure I wasn't missing anything, as I sometimes do, but it seemed that the information was just not there. I'm a maya newbie, so I guess this stuff is something people who use maya should know.

Anyway, considering he was merely defending himself as if he were attacked, I don't really see the point in going off topic and pointing out just how stupid he may be. That's kind of rude, yeah? Nothing good is going to come from it, so why don't we just keep on topic so other stupid people like me can get some answers, maybe? Or maybe I should be thanking you for digging the thread. I will, just in case.

Thank you for digging the thread. :)
