forgive me if this is a noobe question, but is there any way to overcome the ground level collisions and build a baseent or underground tunnel?

Land is is a two dimensional map of heights.
Get some ground texture and put it on some prims to form the top part of a cave. Land can usually be raised/lowered up to 4 M from its original, so there is enough give there to make the top level with the rest of the land.

And water is good for this too. Get a water lot and put part of the build under water.

Yeah first thing I was thinking when I started SL was that wanted to build a large underground dungeon. Then after building some stuff I realised that (1) land is too expensive and (2) it was necessary to fake it.

IIRC, land can be raised/lowered 100m on private island sims... not that that's really helpful, I'm just posting because I'm all 'hey, cool, I actually know something!'.
