sick of the annoying thick wireframe?

Here's how to get rid of it. Make sure you're out of SL, open up C:\Documents and Settings\%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\SecondLife\user_settings\settings.ini and add these 2 lines (note the tab between the parameter and value):

SelectionHighlightThickness .001
SelectionHighlightAlpha .5

Enjoy building in detail without those damn fading wireframe flares getting in the way!

With a thickness of 0, masked/trapsparent prims don't appear highlighted unless partially underground or a non-masked/-transparent prim is in front of it. Oddly, setting SelectionHighlightThickness to 1 gives an interesting result.

.1 is too big too. .01 looks like how SL normally is but I want a thin wireframe on masked/transparent prims and don't want to have to set this fading flare crap big enough to see these prims but making normal prim wireframes too thick. Grr, LL...

Edit 1: OK, looks like .001 is just enough; edited original setting and removed SelectionHighlightAlpha since it's unnecessary.

Edit 2: Re-added SelectionHighlightAlpha because it helps.

much better :) thanks eep. just wish it could go back to only showing the outlines of a few objects instead of EVERY object selected.

I agree, Eep. That wireframe is so annoying when building. It's hard to see how textures seam up and all in all I just like to be able to view everything without all that outlining and still keep my prim selections intact. There so needs to be a toggle switch for this within SL. I like to be able to at least see the wireframe when examining objects.

Thanks for the tip :)

Maybe tie the visibility of the wireframe to the Capslock key. Other programs, like Photoshop, use the Capslock to simplify cursors and icons to make seeing your work easier. You might get a higher number of builders shouting at people when interrupted, but I think it would be worth that risk. :)

Now I don't suppose you know how to replace the texture alignment overlay :D?

Unfortunately, no. I haven't seen that in viewerart.ini, secondlife.exe, or in static_data.db2. :/

Thanks Eep, this looks like a real handy thing, I can't wait to try it out.

The thick outlines and glowy gradient march especially irk me when I am zoomed in, trying match up texture seams...

Thanks Eep.

What else lies in static_data.db2? I am not familiar with that one at all. How does one decipher it?

I've only found some GUI TGA images (just about everything in viewerart.ini) in it so far, but that only accounts for half the 25MB file. There are some Kakadu-header (JPEG2000) images too but the ripper I used is too old to get them.

I don't supposed there might be lurking within the static_data files the secret of changing the gray rectangle with white outline loading texture?

Looking for the db2 file extension I see it used for an ancient dBase format, and appears to be used by the system restore facility in windows, perhaps, but nothing appears in Google instantly that tell me what type of files these db2 files would be or how one would read them.

Unfortunately, I haven't come across the texture loading texture in that file either. As for DB2 files, yea, I haven't had much luck with them either.

Wonderful!

Only problem is that I get the big thick lines again as soon as I move the camera. :(

Hmm, odd. I've never had that problem. Did you make sure SL was closed before changing settings.ini? Though SL won't recognize changes to it until restarted anyway so dunno. :/

Its location is mentioned in the orignal post...for Windows anyway; dunno about Macs/Linux.

For Macs, it's usually;

users/*your_user_name*/Library/ApplicationSupport/SecondLife/user_settings/
settings.ini

...or at least it was for me. :p
It's working perfect. Thank you Eep!

One way to find this is to use the Windows search function.

Start, Search For Files or Folders, put in "settings.ini" and tell it what drive, usually C:

You can make a shortcut to the file once you find it , a shortcut that appears in a place that is so obvious you never have to remember where it it. That is what I do. I know where these things are but I don't like navigating folders or typing pathnames.

That path for the settings.ini file is, as Eep said,
C:\Documents and Settings\%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\SecondLife\user_settings\settings.ini

You have to replace the part that says %USERPROFILE% with the name you are using on you computer, generally the username that you log onto windows with.

It would make sense if this data file is the static texture resources that the grey loading texture might be in there.

It would also make sense that the loading texture would be a JPEG 2000 file considering it's a texture that has to be applied to such a variety of objects. Maybe one of those JPEG's that Eep could see was there (but not access) is it?
