Having trouble Saving Something big?

When you try to save your 50link build thats 2000 prims and you go to re rez it happy that its complete then not all of it rezzes and then you get really mad? This happens to me a lot since i build big ships and i have no way to successfully save when without using rez faux. Its been around since i started and LL keeps fixing the problem then breaking it in a later update.

This is aggravating right having to con-fig ur rez-faux or rez-foo?

I found a solution finally and its rather simple, I don't know if anyone else found this out but i think it will help thousands of us builders when it comes to saving big builds. I rezzed a 20link 2000 prim ship then had all of it highlighted, then i deleted it all at once. Who would guess, i took it out of the trash and not a single piece was missing the whole thing was complete! So i laughed to myself and tried it on some other big ships, same results! its all there no missing pieces nothing!

I tested this about 10 times and each time was successful, if you have the same problem and deleting it all doesn't work for ya let me know but as of now it seems like a pretty rock solid way of saving because before i couldn't get 5 of the 20 links to save on the ship. I recommend you save something using this method as soon as possible and finish your big build because who knows LL might just mess this method up in the future :X

hope this works for ya all Happy new year!

Good idea, but like pretty much everything else in SL these days, unfortunately it doesn't work all the time. I've had it happen where I'll select a bunch of objects, press delete, and only some of them go away. The I reselect the remaining ones, press delete again, and only some of those go away. I end up repeating the process over and over until every prim is gone.

In my experience it's been about 50/50 lately. Sometimes all the objects will delete at once; sometimes not. I assume it has something to do with the alignment of the planets, the mood of that butterfly who may or may not have flapped his wings in Argentina, and the number of groundhogs seeing their shadows at the time.

I have actually done something similar that has yet to fail on me. I select the entire build, and either select "Take" or "Take Copy", and I get a coalesced copy of the entire build in my inventory.

I have moved buildings this way a few times, and it really has saved me some terrific headaches.

Robby, if you haven't experienced this failing lately, you must be the luckiest SOB in all of SL. Ordinarily, the method you're describing is the thing to do, but for the last several weeks it's been all screwed up. You go to take the whole build at once, and you end up only taking pieces of it. Parts of your selection remain behind. It's really frustrating.

Yeah its a major headache, and Today ive tried this delete method and its been 100% successful and when i try take or take copy ive had a 0% success rate so far :/, So as of now the delete method is still working better than anything else ive tried still, If you all know some other solutions let us know :3

Let me understand this right...could I select my entire house of ( UNLINKED ) prims and hit delete, then from my trash I can re rez the whole lot as it was still ( UNLINKED)but in a new location?
Cheers

Yes but i would recommend linking as much as possible and if you want to be safe make sure you have a copy but every time Ive tried it all pieces have deleted and the whole mess of objects saved without one object loss. But if you want to be safer than sorry make sure theres a backup

Thanks for all of those really useful observations.

I was brought to tears yesterday when I attempted linking a hair I had made for a customer, a custom build. Usually my method is that I arrange all of the prims, unlinked until I have the finished number and positioning of prims in the wig. Then, I select them, and move them up, SLIGHTLY just to make sure I've got them all before I link them. Then, I do ctrl-z to reposition them back in the vertical position I had them in.

Well, yesterday, I did this, and it moved HALF of the wig back into position, the other half stayed up too high, and I was unable to put the two together because in the process, some prims were rotated, etc., etc. So, 6 hours of work, gone, and a hairstyle that was perfection (yes, it really was) has to be rebuilt from scratch.

I will try doing the Copy to inventory before linking in the future, see if that works. Unbelievable heartbreak - have been noticing all kinds of quirky prim movements/non-response to usual controls and commands the past few weeks. It is very frustrating. Anybody with tips, I'm all ears!

Cheers,

I used to use the shift copy method, but it was unreliable for me. Now with everything i build, i do this.

tools -> select only my objects
select the entire build while in edit mode and wait. The reason i wait is sometime it takes a really long time to get the owner information and i found that if i wait until it shows me as the owner / creator in object properties - i am generally successful. then i do a take copy.

Word of warning though. Dont assume that your first copy will be complete. I generally check the prim count several times to make sure all are being selected. For example - in one build i had prim counts of

477
493
499
504
499
503

An no time were all my prims being selected for whatever reason. SO i figured 504 was close to the actual count and when i hit 503 i took my copy. It took me hours to find that one missing prim.

The process can be more involved depending on how thorough you can be.

My way of moving large structures between sims:

1. Make sure 'select only my objects' is checked in tools menu
2. Link the structure in multiple linked sets as best as possible.
3. Make sure debug window is open (ctrl-shift-1)
4. Make sure edit window is open and on general tab

Taking:
1. Move avie close to the building. (So LOD isn't playing havoc, small prims won't be visible from a distance and can't be selected, also take this into account when building the linked sets)
2. Use and position camera so structure is easily selectable. (Usually selection from above are good on ground rezzed structures)
3. Drag select the whole structure. Or use shift select.
----
Sometimes i use drag select, then shift-unselect to see if i have any 'missing prims' from my linked sets. So i can relink forgotten prims to the linked sets.
----
4. Mark the total prims selected in general tab.
5. Wait for 'the best moment' by checking packet-loss/bandwidth and sim performance/time dilation (Packet loss plays havoc with taking/rezzing items). Also try to time at moment that sim is least busy. (Avies popping in and out of sims slows them down considerably) Also make sure that bandwidth is low. (Client isn't doing other stuff)
6. Right click->take copy
7. Watch the bandwidth spike happening in debug window. Wait till it's gone again.
8. Repeat 6/7 several times.

Rezzing:
1. Make SURE you are in edit mode and have general tab open.
2. Again check for bandwidth/packet-loss/time dilation and pick the 'best' moment to rez.
3. Rez/drag the structure from inventory to location.
4. Check general tab and see the selected prim count go up. Check if it's the same as the one noted while taking the building.
5. If the primcount is always less than on the original object. Try one of the other versions you took.

Moving/rotating after rez:
1. again make sure you're client isn't doing other stuff (low bandwidth) on debug window.
2. Move/rotate the structure by dragging in 'even paces', meaning, don't go moving and dragging in small amounts without waiting. While dragging, usually selection/view is getting messed up, don't worry, it usually fixes itself.
3. Before each new 'movement step', make sure bandwidth is down again.
4. After moving, check if the structure didn't get corrupted.

As to the 'delete' method, i haven't tried this, as I don't want to take the risk of destroying my original build, before I'm sure i have a complete copy in inventory, or rezzed in a separate location.
