*****ATTENTION FELLOW SL BUILDERS!!!******
I did not beleive it when I first heard it either, but appearantly it's true, as I saw it with my own two eyes..
**THIS IS A VERY REAL THREAT** Someone has created a program that looks at and decrypts packets, sends the info back and re-creates it..
In other words, this program can copy ANYTHING THAT IS A PRIM and move it into THEIR inventory in a matter of SECONDS. I investigated it myself. My target willingly tp'ed me to his location and immediately fully coppied my entire CUSTOM av onto his body. Shapes, textures, prims, EVERYTHING. A CARBON copy of my self-made av.
What's more..? It is now sitting in HIS inventory, FULL PERMS. Assets completely changed, the creator now labeled as himself.
He also claims that a Robin Linden held a conference on this matter, and deemed his program LEGAL. My Linden friends, if this is true, you have stooped to a WHOLE new level. Do you understand what this means..? Anyone posessing this program can just walk into any store and copy EVERYTHING. (Everything that is a prim, anyway)
Also, I have word that this is a group-created program. By whom, I do not know. But all I know is that at LEAST two people have it. (I have watched them.) I did not get a very good screenshot, as he was teleported away soon thereafter.
As an artist with a custom av that took me months to build myself, I find this as a BIG alarm. This is not only the very definition of Art Theft, but also identity theft, and...hell, pretty much just plain THEFT. We have a right to have our works protected, and that right better be executed.
I think I speak on behalf of EVERYONE when I say this script needs to be BANNED and we need a REMEDY to protect our own belongings from such a horrible threat.
Friends, the ONLY way we can beat this thing is to band together and stand up against the wrong. To do so, please join "Content Creators Union." It is free, and this is NOT just some cause we are fighting for. Builders, this is our LIVELIHOOD and this threat is REAL.
THIS IS NOT A JOKE. YOU NEED TO JOIN THIS CAUSE! ANYONE WHO HAS THIS SCRIPT CAN JUST WALK UP TO ANYTHING YOU OWN AND TAKE A FULL-RIGHTS COPY!!

If you're going to rally a mob this late into a crisis, you should at least CITE your sources instead of posting not-so-well informed incendiary hand-waving. YES this is serious. But trying to get people to run around like lunatics will only end up with people getting hurt one way or another.

woulda been nice if you actually looked into the problem before flying off the handle..
A: its not a script, its an outside program. B: it was NOT designed to steal things, thats just the malcious end of it. C: it was just a matter of time before this exploit was discovered. be thankfull that a linden based group found it out, and not a hacker. D: there are scripts that combat and defeat the copy-bot very effectivly. if your wetting your pants over it, use them. E: shutting your buesness down "untill copybot is fixed" means you will never open again. it is a hole in the code, not just some script they can disable. F: you speak on behalf of yourself, and nobody else. only a somewhat educated person may speak for me.

If I'm not mistaken, all these "Simple CopyBot Defender" scripts are worthless.
They just spam "!quit" in chat.
Meanwhile, the actual copybot software listens only to the person that is actually running the software.
So, in all seriousness, there's no real way to stop this.
Also, the copybot doesn't steal the contents of prims, it merely mirrors the prims themselves, with textures.
There's no way it will steal your precious scripts, animations, and whatnot.
So for the builders... Sorry, guys, sucks to be you.
For the scripters... No sweat.

After seeing the bot demo'd in a sandbox yesterday, I can only say that I appreciate your warning! Wish that MORE of your type worked for Linden Lab Research. But perhaps not. Robin might have you fired. Hopefully, Robin Linden, as supporter of the bot is not complicit with its creation. It sounds like her savvy brand of business model to me: One. Get content for a wasteland venue from customers by sending them emails calling them 'Content Creators', and encouraging excellent graphic design. Two. Get some bigger money into the game, ie, RL/big business. Three. Steal the content to maintain the landscape when the herds head toward the exit. A bit like virtual eminent domain Sounds like a Robinesque thing to me.

I don't really see this as a threat, although being a "pure" primmer/texturemaker, yes it's supposed to make me feel alarmed. For me, there is a simple solution to make sure the buyer knows he's buying an "authentic" (but now more expensive) primmed product from me. First off I would simply double the price of my models for sale, and let the buyer WATCH me build. I can prim a 226 prim rifle in just 15-20 minutes anyways. If someone appears a few minutes later with the SAME rifle I just built, and sells it to the same buyer for cheaper, then it's up to the buyer to support this lame way of making money--after all, I simply would stop making my beautiful rifles...so who's the real loser now? -RODION
