Anyone know a good website that talks you thought how to build skins n shapes for avatars?

Making skins is a topic for the Texturing Tips forum, and it's not an easy exercise for the faint-hearted. Pop over there and start digging through the forum archives. Shapes, on the other hand, are designed entirely by messing with SL's Appearance sliders. The best way to learn, other than just playing with the sliders, is to gather a lot of freebie shapes and try them on for size. See what their settings look like and use those as a starting point for your own experiments.

Eloh Elliot gives her skins away as downloads - you can use them as a jumping board for your own making- here is a link to where it is mentioned and then to the skins:
