I found a texture (at a web site that specialises in that sort of thing). i want to bring the texture to sl. So which can i download to my computer (from the internet) and then upload to use as a texture?

.tiff
.jpeg
.eps (can it be downloaded - put in Adobe Illustrator then changed to a .tga for use in the game?)

Which of these files can be uploaded to the game? Most of these are downloadable as vector .eps. Please please please say these will work in second life.

SL supports .jpg, .bmp, .tga, and .png. Not .tiff, not even JPG2000 (stupidly enough), and most certainly not any vector format natively.

I believe .tiff and .jpeg can be modified in your computer to .tga depending on what you use there.
Warning there may be a loss of layer depth when converting to .tga.

Well, yes, but I didn't think this needed to be said - anyone with even a halfway respectable graphics package can convert almost any format to almost any other format.

A note on uploaded textures...

Remember, technically ALL textures that go into SL end up as JPG2000 files (which is why Reitsuki finds it silly that you can't actually upload them using that format). Also, the texture shown on your prims is effectively never greater than 512×512 in size. (to get around this, either use multiple textured surfaces, or tile a single texture multiple times across a surface.)

Basically just save it to a .png/.tga/.bmp (doesn't matter which) at 512×512, or any other lower powers of 2 e.g. 128×256, and upload that file.

On an interesting note, I heard that 128×128 and below are being made lossless for sculpting purposes, though I'd have to ask Qarl for more info on that one....

I heard this as well today. It's great news. No more having to upload via command line just to get straight lines. Yay! I love Qarl. :)

I was just trying to be helpful. To return the many times I have been helped by someone taking the time to reply. I'll just sit quietly in the background from now on.

Sorry - that came off harsher than intended. I was just trying to make it clear I wasn't too stoopid to think of that ;)

You can convert vector .eps to tga image files with Ghostscript

Wouldn't it be simpler just to convert it in one of the standard, full-featured program like Photoshop, PSP, GIMP, or Paint.net? Just about everyone on this forum has at least one, if not several, of these. They're required must-haves for anyone doing any texturing at all.

While it's nice that people are out there exercising their programming chops by making these obscure little dedicated translation utilities, I really can't fathom why anyone would bother with them when the standard tools already do all the same things and more.

He he. Well as Rachel mentioned Illustrator I'm assuming she will be using that.

I'm not familiar with the import / export options of all the software out there, and was just offering an option for anyone who needs a standalone converter.

Made me laugh to hear Ghostscript called obscure :)
