If I were to purchase a private island, would I be able to upload new terrain data at my discretion?
Or is it limited to only being possible when first purchasing an island?
If I were to buy a private island, what dimensions would be required if I wanted to use a single raw file to cover the entire area or are different 'sims' different sizes?
I'm still trying to get to grips with all this.
Thanks for your time.

It's at your discretion. You could do it every hour, on the hour, if you really wanted to drive visitors crazy.

All sims measure 256 Meters by 256 Meters. There are two "4x Islands" that you can order, which consist of four sims at once, purchased as a unit and placed on the grid in a 2x2 array, pre-terraformed into a single large land mass.
I believe the data points on the terrain grid form a 0.5M X/Y grid. You can't get any better resolution than that, no matter what you upload. So figure 512 data points in each direction.

If you get an island, I'll recommend that before messing with the RAW files and terraforming, save a copy of the RAW file for the initial state. You can also save additional RAW files as you terraform, so you can go back to previous looks readily.
At any point, you can "Bake" the terrain changes into place, which makes the current terrain surface the default that you go back to on a Revert, and sets the terrain surface that terraform limits are defined from.

Again, thank you. I was just wondering why there are so few 'raws' available for download. I was looking for something to work from, something similar to one of those 4 starting islands perhaps.
I'm relatively happy with what I have at the moment. I'm using terragen and Bailiwick. They're a god send for this sort of thing.

I believe LL figured most people would use the terraforming tools to make their own unique forms. It can be done, certainly. I completely redid one private island for a client, leaving no trace of the original terrain, even under water. And did it all with in-world tools.
Still, I would love to be able to make terrains in Bryce and import them.
Academic for me, as I'll never be able to afford my own sim.
