I know it's possible to apply a texture to only certain select faces of a prim, but I can't figure out how to do it for the life of me. texturing the whole thing I know, but selecting and texturing individual faces is beyond me. This is a VERY basic question I know, but I've only been at this thing for 2 weeks so I'm rather clueless with SL at the moment...
Anyway, how do I do it? Any good tutorials/lessons online or in-game that I can check out?

For a quick answer, use the "select texture" check box up on the left of your edit menu, along with position, rotate, stretch etc.. Then just click the face you want to select.. It'll get like a crosshair thing on it.. Then just change the texture as usual.. You can also hold shift to select/de-select multiple faces...

And my favorite way of doing it is to just drag and drop!
You just drag the texture you want out of your inventory and drop it down on the side of the prim you want.
