Newbie needs some advice.

Hello, Im a complete newbie when it comes to Second Life, in fact its only my second day. I really like the idea of SL though and think that it is something that I would like to stick with for some time.

I am a bit confused about this whole building and scripting thing though. I know about computers but have no idea on how to program.

Is there a definitive guide somewhere that explains what the scripting/building is all about, and maybe one that tells me how to do it. I really want to get involved, just dont know where to start.

Hello Benjamin and welcome

There is an excellent self-guided, hands-on tutorial about building in-world, at the Ivory Tower of Primitives. I dropped a landmark on your inventory; or just search in "Find places". As for scripting, the LSL wiki at http://secondlife.com/badgeo/ contains a few tutorials plus of course the complete language reference.

Also watch the event listing for building, texturing and scripting classes. There are usually a few of them every week, but since the classes are held by residents, time and availability often varies.

Im at work at the moment so I cant check the in game tutorial, but I just had a brief look at the wiki and it seems very concise.

This is exactly what I was looking for.

I put several notes and landmarks in your inventory with informati0on and place to find help. I also gave you an object called "Garden Ambiator." This has simple, annotated scripts that you can modify.

For scripting, I think you will learn faster and with less frustration if you start with a working script and make one change at a time. Then select SAVE. The system will either compile or notify you of an error, with location indicated.

Cheers mate, im sure they will be a great help. One quick off topic question though. Everytime somebody gives me something in game I get an e-mail telling me so, so far I got about 10 emails just telling me that somebody has given me something.

Any ideas on how to turn this off?

Look under "Preferences", there is an option to turn off "IM to Email", I think it's on the "IM/Chat" tab.
