Mirror, Mirror as a Prim

Hey all,

Does anyone know of anyone who has attempted to create a prim as a mirror? This could either be to just have a mirror or used as a reflection on a surface. The easiest way I could think of doing this is have a Prim somehow take a screenshot from its front and then create that as its texture as streaming video. With a really low framerate, of course.

Anyone got any ideas?

I just thought of how this might be useful:
Imagine how awesome it would be in a combat sim to have mirrors everywhere?!!!!

They really need to make it happen! Like in the old school... Worlds.com. Avatars are notoriously vain.

As for SL, it was before my time, but I read that Bedazzle's group somehow made reflections in their Chinatown project... There is a pic with pools of water on the ground with a realistic mirror effect...

That involved having an identical but reversed build under the ground - and a partially transparent floor.

the problem is that reflective surfaces will bring even the mightiest PC to its knees when there's a bunch of people all diddling around in front of a mirror... most likely, this option was left out intentionally...

moove has mirrors

In the online 'Moove' world, my japanese house created there uses a ' paint texture on wall' and select transparency option similar to SL and creates absolutely perfect mirrored walls in which every visiting AV and the surroundings are competely reflected just like real mirror glass. It is the BEST online Mirror texture I have ever seen and works completely as in 1L.

How does Moove achieve this?

Interesting also they have a great texture import system, u drag right from your computer folder into game, and the tex appears as a prim-like cube on the floor, and from there u can simply drag/throw the cube at any wall or surface and it expends perfectly to fill that size of wall with texturing perfectly suited to size.

Moove only allows you to create ' rooms' not actual buildings and there is no ' exterior world' around them (unless u create a room as a garden) In many ways its a simple chat/meet place but with an interesting interior design method.

I have made a complete 3D looking Japanese house (interiors only) there with gardens, mirrored walls, furniture and items which looks every bit as good as an SL one, tho the system of AV making and movement is a LOT less impressive than in SL the texturing system and the mirror function are excellent.

The real way to do mirrors (and no SL dose not do this) is to make the client (not server) take a low rez image from point of view of the mirror and then put that on a prim, for rendering the real image.. and do this recursively if you want to have a reflection of a reflection.

This would do nothing to hurt the servers.. but would kill the clients frame rate (so I agree it was intentionally left out). However it is doubtful 1 or 40 AVs in the sim would make much of a difference.

now as for what people have done in SL, You can make a mirror build, if you can hide it, of course AVs will not be reflected. or if you just want to see yourself I've seen products that look like a gray mirror on one side, and when you "sit" (select look in the mirror) puts your camera inside the wall with the mirror, looking out at your self, (with the wall texture around the window) so it looks like you are looking in the mirror.. sorta..
