I'll save you L$10,000. Three steps to follow:

1. Read the sculpty wiki.

2. Obtain and learn how to use a sculpty-capable 3D modeling program. This will take a while, depending on which program you choose, your pre-existing experience level, and your affinity for 3D modeling. However, it's the most important step, so don't try forcibly to speed it up. If you don't take the time to learn how to use a 3D modeling program really well, you'll never be able to make very good sculpties. So, be prepared to invest a good amount of time here. There's no way around that.

3. Read the sculpty wiki again to learn how to apply your new knowledge of your 3D modeling program specifically to sculpties.

I'm also putting together a highly detailed guide, which I'll hopefully have published in a few weeks. That doesn't help you now, of course, but when it's ready, I'm sure you'll find it useful.
