high shine

hi all been building a pritty funky sky lift , it looks great with high shine ,texture steel .but i was wondering if most people have this effect enabled ,and does it create lag ?

pro,s and cons ?

I think it's safe to assume these days that most people probably do have shine enabled. That wasn't the case a few years ago, but it most likely is now. For people with older hardware, though, shine might not be an option. For that reason, it's usually a good idea to incorporate a faux shine, painted into your texturing, as well as a "real" shine, so that your texture looks reasonably good to everyone. Faux shine can be achieved rather easily with a simple gradient overlay in most cases.

As for whether shine crates lag, well, technically EVERYTHING that needs to be drawn on-screen slows things down a little bit, shine included. Shine is probably among the least resource-intensive effects though. Again, if someone has very old hardware, then it might be a strain. But for any computer that meets or exceeds SL's recommended specs, it shouldn't be a problem at all.
