I have not seen a lot of underwater building in SL...it seems many landowners with waterfront property ignore the submerged portion of their land. I am new, but as far as I can tell there is no difference between building on the sea floor and building on dry land (other than there being less light down there . Is this correct? Also, are there any interesting underwater builds that anyone recommends seeing? Thanks.

Hi there! Well In fact Ive just finished with an ocean at this address.. 96, 47, 15
in ElvenVale sim
It belongs to a merman called Magik, and he asked me to decorate it!! Its a humble start but the fish really swim around! Please have a look. Mostly coral snd fish, but theres a sunken ship and also treasure chests all over.
Im looking for a larger water sim where I can rent an underwater space for my mermaid. wish me luck!

Yes, you certainly can build under water. I once made a three-story building that was completely 'below sea level'. Unfortulately, there is no way to exclude 'water' from builds that are below the Linden water plane. So everything looks like it has a blue cast to it, and visibility drops off rapidly. Also, any animation overrides that react to the Linden water plane will treat you as in the water, so you'll swim instead of fly, or whatever that AO normally does in open water. (I later eliminated that three story underwater build, because I couldn't avoid the unwanted water effects).
When I built Wailele Isle, I placed quite a few animated fish and a sunken treasure ship offshore, to entertain swimmers. Watch out for the sharks! The shipwreck is one I purchased from another builder, and it is in the NW corner of the sim, offshore from the resort swimming pool.
Nohona Isle doesn't have any underwater builds, per se, but I did place fish swimming in the offshore waters, when I built that sim.
On Meeting Isle, (not my work) the default telehub is a room that is below the water level. They decoreted it so the blue cast to the light seems like an intentional indirect lighting effect. Anyone visiting that sim who is not a resident starts in that underwater room.

I have an underwater build that many people have bought for their abode- 'Neptune's Retreat'. It can be seen at my island, Serenity Falls, home to Creative Fantasy Home & Garden. It even has an underwater garden room and looks great when you add fish to swim around the rooms!

It's good to see people taking advantage of the underwater areas. I visited all of the builds mentioned above, and all were very nice. I liked the "magic walls" in Neptune's Retreat. There were sharks swimming about at Wailele Isle (but I think it is in the NW corner of the region). And had fun searching for pearls at ElvenVale. There is a cool kind of spooky atmosphere in the depths, with the muted sound and low visibility. One thing to try when out exploring: Walk along the sea floor on the edges of people's properties. You get a unique perspective on the stuff they built on the surface of the water and occasionally find forgotten objects and the ragged, "unfinished" bottoms of items that look more polished when viewed from above the surface. No scuba gear required!

Hi! I'm just finishing my underwater habitat/club.. If you want to see what you can do underwater in SL, feel free to check it out.. Its at Vashti (182,194,21). I'm thinking about opening it as a club, though that may be in the future..

The bottom level of my club is underwater. Work is still being done on it but the builder for that portion (Kelindra Talamasca) has done some realy neat tricks with lighting and so forth.

From: Sawdust Fossil There were sharks swimming about at Wailele Isle (but I think it is in the NW corner of the region). Oops! You're right! It's NW, not SE, as I originally posted. Corrected my error... -- Ceera
