so - I have a modifiable chain that I got as a freebie - its a bit too long. I was able to remove some of the links and piece it back together (poorly), but the removed links are still floating around. Ive ended up moving them into my avatar for now to hide them.

How do I delete the extra links?

should I be using another tool besides the basic stuff that comes in the viewer?

thanks in advance

When you have the edit menu open, in the upper left side you'll see a tickbox for editing individual prims (i'm not in game and don't remember the actual name on it, but if you've been able to push them around individually you'll know which one it is).

Pick the links you want to have deleted (shift click to select multiple prims) then click the tools menu.

Near the bottom of the menu is an "Unlink" option.

Clicking it will unlink just the selected prims.

Once you do that, the whole object will be reselected though, so Shift-Click the part you want to keep and you'll just have the deletable and unlinked prims selected.

Then hit the delete key on your keyboard.

so - say for instance - the chain is made of 1000 links, and I want to remove 50. Would I have to reselect the other 950 individually in the scenario you've described? I tried using the old click and drag to select multiple items like you would in windows, but all that did was draw a yellow rectangle - it didn't select anything...

First, make sure Edit Linked Parts is turned on. Then select the 50 prims you want to remove, and then hit Tools -> Unlink. Those 50 will break off from the rest of the chain to become 50 individual objects. (That's assuming it's one prim per link. It could easily be more.) The rest of the chain will remain unaffected. Once the parts you don't want are unlinked from the rest, you can go ahead and delete them.

Of course, if we want to get technical, you can't link more than 256 prims together anyway, so a 1000-prim chain isn't even possible.

Make sure Select By Surrounding is turned on in the Tools Menu. It also helps to have Select Only My Objects turned on as well, so you don't end up selecting other people's stuff at the same time.

If you're working indoors, it might not always be possible to draw a selection box without encompassing parts of the building at the same time. If there's anything you don't want to risk selecting by accident, lock it down first by deliberately selecting it once, and then checking the Locked ckeckbox in the editor. Then turn on Select Only Movable Objects in the Tools menu. From that point on, until you turn off Select Only Movable Objects, you won't be able to select anything that is locked. This cuts way down on tragic accidents.

No, you won't have to reselect them, they're one linkset by themselves now. All you have to do is de-select them using shift-click. That leaves the 50 deletable ones selected so you can remove them.

And once you have the Select by Surrounding checked, also check Select only My Objects so you won't get an error message about not being able to delete something that's not yours. Selecting with the box, it's very easy to pick up something belonging to someone else.

Sorry I wasn't clearer to begin with.

I appreciate the replies folks. I'll have to find a quiet place and try this out again.
