Can I import meshes created in Wings3D to another app to be "painted" or otherwise "bake" a texture to export along with the .bmp sculpty bound for SL?

note: my dearch ability is severely disables at present, due to 503 error....sorry

note #2: I shouldn't have postd this here - it should be in the Texture Section.

Sorry.

If you're referring to painting directly on the mesh there are a couple of possibilities. Modo, Zbrush, and Cinema4D's Bodypaint, allow for direct painting on the mesh. There may be others but these are the ones I'm familiar with. As well Photoshop CS3 has as close as you can get without actually painting directly on the mesh in real time. It has a 3d object viewer that updates changes to an image that you're currently working on by means of a bridge between the paint program and the viewer.

Any number of programs can do this (assuming that Wings is exporting an appropriate UV map with the mesh, I dont know if it does or not). If you want to pay a couple hundred dollars then there are a dozen or more programs to choose from. If you want to do it for free then Blender would be your best choice.

By the time you have figured out how to import and reexport all of the files, as well as learned how to set up lighting, bake your textures and use the painting features you might as well have just made your mesh in the other program. I guess what I am saying is that by the time your ready to start texturing your sculpties, its time for you to upgrade from Wings to a real 3d program. Take your pick of Maya, 3DS Max, Blender, or AC3D and start learning :)

I recommend..........

- Photoshop or Gimp
- Sculpty Space
- Unwrap3d

With these 3 tools you can texture Sculpties with Success......

Thanks so much for all your responses!

Again, I apologize for posting here, as I should clearly be posting this in the Texture area.....

Update: I've read a ton since my last post and have DLed Blender. I also found this Flash Blender "tutorial", specifically for "painting" directly on the object:

http://www.foro3d.com/attachments/f26/62962d1198603811-texturizado-con-blender-3dpaint.swf

I was hoping to just follow the visual steps shown in the tutorial but unfortunately, I have no idea (yet) how to get Blender's windows and configurations into the same state as the one in the beginning of the tutorial.....

I have no problem with be a motivated, self-starting, burning-the-midnight-oil kinda guy but the hard part here is that I'm coming from an "export only to SL" perspective, which means I have to wade through tons of stuff that I *can't* do because it involves changing the number of vertices, faces...etc...

Also, I don't *have* to "paint" directly on the object and I'm very comfortable in PS, so if I could take the mesh I've created in Wings3D and somehow create and export to PS an un-wrapped UV map, I could do this the "old fashioned way"....

Again, thanks so much for all your help! :D

Unless I am mis-understanding, this is easy to do within Wings, even before you export the model as a sculpty. See
