Hi
I've seen some message onthe forums about building being built across sims to increase the number of people that can meet.
Is there a limit to the number of avatars in the same "room"? If so how do places like the various dance clubs get round the problem?
Many thanks in advance

Mainland sims have a capacity of 40 avs per sim. Private sims can have that number upped, however it adds to the lag considerably. So, theoretically, if you have a club in the corner of four sims you could possibly have up to 160 avs in one "location" at once.

Thanks Abba
Just check I understand correctly (still new at this building and land lark!) - 40 per sim means 40 people per "named" area such as Tipton or Elingson etc - not per parcel?
Many thanks

Um, lets see. we actually need to conduct an experiment. I wonder how many "VIEWERS" can be simultaneously observing an event on a sim. What would the maximum be if there were no concerns of AV apperance or physics or running scripts?
what kinds of events have never taken place because the idea of having 1000 observers has been a laughable concept?

Not many, trying to get 1000 SL users to do anything at once isn't going to be easy. Avatar limit and viewer "limit" aren't far off, either. Back during the birthday bash before last one, they did the 4-corner-stage trick for some of the events, and... it wasn't fun. To put it mildly.

Paul Yes, its 40 avs per sim (65+k m2) not per parcel. I've attended fun get togethers at the Podcast Pickle Island group, where there were multiple avs in the four corners. The speaker was broadcasting on all four sims at once *I think* through the audio feed. Don't quote me on that though. My friend in the next sim over was a few seconds behind me on what was heard. A

There is also the trick at L Word Island(s)...25 identical islands, so 25x40 people could be there and more or less think they were in the same place.
If you build a special purpose viewer that could multiplex one performer to all 25 islands...

wow this is far more interesting and thought provoking than I originally thought! I was just trying to set up some kind of meeting/lecture room and wondered how many chairs to put out however I can see that this quite a limitation and I'm impressed by the ingenious ways people get round them - what an inventive lot you all are!! Maybe the new infrastructure projects annouced the other day will lead to inceased avs counts? Not holding my breath waiting though ........

If you build a special purpose viewer that could multiplex one performer to all 25 islands... The caveat with that is that while with multiplexed sims you can have more than 40 people attend, each sim full of people can only interact with the 40 people in the real sim that they are in. So if you had ungodly amounts of money to waste, you could, for example, build 100 identical sims that looked like Times Square, and 4000 people could attend a new years bash there, all watching identical multimedia screens where the host does the countdown to New Years... But you would only SEE 40 people in the sim you're in - never a crowd of 4000. The Pooley Auditorium in SL is a Linden Venue that straddles either two or four sim boundries (I forget which), so at least 80 people can simultaneously attend a meeting there - 40 on each sim. The lag when they do that is horrific, unless you have an uber-powerful graphics card and computer.
