Maybe this is a stupid question, but is there an easy way to mirror a prim? I've been trying to make some curly horns but I can't get the opposite horn the same. Any help?

Um, defne *easy* - so far I use the following procedure but I'm a pretty new to building so there may be more effective ways:
Duplicate the prim, rotate it round it's vertical axis by 180 egrees. Now you have a "mirror" image of the original prim. Problem: The stuff's still out of position. Now take another prim, link the two horns with the new prim last selsected. In Edit mode switch to local coordinates and select your first horn. move it to where you'd like it, then copy it's x or y coordinate - select the other horn and paste this in there, repeat with the second coordinate - only here you will have to put the number in negative - if you get 0.15 on the one horn it should be -0.15 on the other. Finally duplicate the z-Setting. your horns are now truly mirrored around the origin of the third prim. You can now unlink and delete the last prim or keep it (small and invisible) to use as a single attachment point. The whole process is a lot easier when you use scripts that tell coordinates automatically and receive and set them. ![]() I *hope* there are other, better ways .... |

the above will only work if the objects are symetrical unfortunately. If you have a complex shape you will need to manually adjust the shapes cut/twist etc or there are scripts about that can do this. I have used a couple and they seem to work fine

Jeffrey Gomez's Prim Mirror Script works really well. I use it all the time.
Before Jeffrey released this little gem, I used to do lots of tedious math by hand for reversing cuts, twists, tapers, and rotations, but now I just fire up the Prim Mirror, and it's all done automatically. It's an incredible time-saver. Enjoy. _____________________

I second the mirror script suggestion. It's fantastically useful - the last thing I used it on was my skeletal horse av - built one side aganst a picture reference board, duplicated it, set up the mirror prim and dropped the second script into each part of it. Instantly solved, pain-free and swift.
Just test it first so you have your 'mirror' at the right rotation, else you'll just turn your horn upside-down or something instead. And use a copy, it rotates the actual prim you place the second script in, it doesn't duplicate it. It probably says all this in Chosen's link, but I'm an eejit and these are the things I had to figure out when I first used it because I don't read instructions... |

It's a common question. I actually lurk this forum to catch it when it pops up.
And, as always, I've passed along a copy. Enjoy! ![]() _____________________

Thanks Jeffrey.
I've tried it and it's a great tool. Shame this is not a standard feature though. |
