Hi Jeanne,

I have not seen nor heard of any prim hair making tutorials on line. I did read a while back about an in-world guide called "Hair Making for Dummies" or something along that line. You may search the forum to see if you can find the proper title and where to obtain said guide.

Happy hunting.

Edit to add: Search Schnook's in world under places. They have a guide on how to make hair (and other things)

Best,

Just thinking outloud...

I'd be willing to create a Hair Making/Texturing tutorial if there is a need in the forum...time permitting if there isn't one already easily accessible. I could cover the basics if nothing else to get people started.

Or can there be a sticky made with all of the current posts regarding this topic?

I would be extremely grateful for a hair tutorial.

Perhaps I'll work on one. There seems to be a need, and I get IM'd often enough with questions to make it worth having something to give out.

I've considered offering a free class (limiting the number of people), but I'm not sure of the logistics of it. I have a location...so at least that's a start :)

I would definitely sign up for it except that you could probably charge more money than I have. (I just started two days ago.) I've been experimenting and I learned a lot at the Ivory Tower of Primitives. But I just can't figure out how to get the hair to wiggle and bounce like it should. (Among other things.)

I would love to read a tutorial or attend such a class as well! :)

I'm working on a tutorial (complete with pictures) and will *probably* post it on a website for easy access.

It could be a few weeks until it's up and running, but I'll let everyone know when it is.

As for a class, I would not charge. I've been given so much wonderful information from people inworld and on these boards it's the least I can do to help others.

Hair help

This site has many useful tutorials on the left sidebar:

http://taunt.com/

Not only is there a how to adjust prim hair video, there is also a hair texture tutorial, how to make eye texture tutorial, and many other useful tutorials and videos for SecondLife ! As for guides explaining how to make prim hair step by step, the only one ive noticed so far has been the Schnooks guide that someone already mentioned. It really takes alot of messing around with the building tools and getting familiar with the shapes and how the settings change them :))

HOORAY for the ppl making some tutorials, I get asked everyday where to learn how! Good luck everyone :)

Hair texture fringes

The Taunt site was great for hair texturing tutorial but it lacked how to make the ends of hair with fringe. Any help with this would be great. I use Paint Shop Professional but a Photoshop tutorial would be helpful as well. Thank You

Hello Michel!

I know nothing about PSP, but here's how I make the fringe alpha in Photoshop:
- on an alpha channel use a soft brush and make a zig zag pattern horizontally across the page at about 1/3 of the way down: \/\/\/\/\/\/
- fill in the top with white
- using the blending tool (say around 70%) drag vertically up and down across the zig zags. Try to keep them as vertical as possible with no overly large lines. Softness is the key.
- The result looks like an x-ray of the ends of hair
-make sure the white does NOT go to the bottom of the page or you will have some bleed where the fringe ends and the other begins. That's a real bear when you're texturizing the hair. If needed use black and a soft brush across the bottom to ensure you don't have this issue.

Then I copy and save it so I can use it over and over.

Hope that helps!
Best,

Here are a couple of other tricks that might help :)

1. making the fringe
One of the ways I've made fringe in the past, is to use the SL template hair
http://secondlife.com/community/templates.php

Open it and grab just the alpha or opacity portion. The template is goofy since it's made for original style Linden hair so it covers all four sites of the texture but you can use the marquee tool to crop out a portion that can be used with a modern hair texture. You can cut out several pieces and blend them or manipluate one section. This method works well.

2. fixing a ghost edge
I had not heard Arikinui's great tip until now on the bleed...I have to try that. If you already have existing textures with alpha and you can see a ghose edge, here is one way to repair it. If you are not sure what this is, toss your hair texture with alpha onto a cube and hold it up to the blue sky...if you see a hint of rectangle line around the soft edge, this is what I call ghost edge and I think it is the same thing as Arikinui calls bleed? To fix this, you can usually stretch the texture in one or two directions, or off-set it just a hint to move the edge off the prim..try experimenting with dropping the texture to .98 per side instead of 1 time per side.

This edge problem is not exclusive to hair and sometimes you might be making something like...say a store sign with a cut-ouf of an avie and where you want edges perfect clear and invisible...one technique is to take your texture with some alpha on it and you essentially blow it out giant...so .1 and .1 or 0 times per side horizontal and 0 times per side vericle...and then use the offesets to try and move the clear invisible portion of the giant texture, onto the surface you want to be perfectly clear. I hope this babbling kind of made sense. :D

Ok, but now how do you apply your colored hair textures with this template of the fringe?

in ps, click channels tab and click a new layer which will be an alpha and then save it as a Targa .tga with alpha box checked and 32 bit when it asks. Hope that is what you mean. :)

Ari, did you finish the tutorial on building prim hair and I just missed it in here? I'm really interested in creating some styles and have been playing around with a couple of the freebie/newbie hair that is modifiable, but I'm still going at it rather blind. At present I'm not interested in creating my own textures (poor old PSP V6 that I have), but anything on how to created, link and flexify prims for hair would be appreciated!

Hi Fionne....I'm working on it (along with a few other projects at the moment). It *should* be out by mid Feb.

I will try to post a step by step quick reference here in a day or two if that would help.

If you have any specific questions, please feel free to post them.
