I'm happy to help, but I'm not sure what you mean by "build avs". If you're asking how to make a new avatar from scratch, the best way to go about is to open your inventory and make a new folder. Right click on the folder, and use the popup menu to create a full set of body parts and whatever clothing items you'll want the av to be wearing. Drag the folder onto yourself to wear the new av.

The new avatar will look pretty bad at first since it's gonna be at default settings for everything. Right click on yourself and select "Appearance" from the pie menu to open the appearance editor. You'll see tabs for every body part and artical of clothing with lots of sliders on each for ajusting size, shape, coloring, etc. The best way to learn to use all the sliders is simply by doing. There are about 100 of them, and there's no way anything I could say about any one of them here could teach you more initially than just playing with them could. Sculpting the body with the sliders to look good is something that takes artistry and time. There's no way around that.

As for clothing the avatar, most of the work for that is done outside of SL in programs like Photoshop. I'd recommend you read the Fashion Design Guide to learn the basics, and then come back with any specific questions you might have.

If by "build avs" you meant attaching prims to the body, that's pretty simple. Right click on an object, select "attach" (You might have to select "more" first. I can't remember since I'm not online right now.) and then pick the body part you want to attach the object to. You will more than likely need to move the object into the exact positon you want it after you attach it. By default, the center of the object will align with the center of the body part its attached to. To move it, just right click on it, select "edit", and manipulate as you normally would. You'll find the process is much easier if you get yourself a poser stand to lock the av in place so it doesn't move while you're aligning the prims. Rickard Roentgen sells a great one, which is what I use. It has buttons for many different poses, very handy.
