go into the hypershader in maya, there you can create textures, but you cannot UVmap a nerbs model.

Texturing a NURBS surface is exactly the same as texturing any other type of surface, except that there's generally no UV-mapping involved. All NURBS surfaces are perfect rectangles, always, so UV-mapping isn't usually part of the equation, at least not in the traditional sense. Texturing for NURBS is pretty straight forward. There's not really any trickery to it.
That's, of course, assuming you already know how to create textures in general, and that you already have at least a basic understanding of whichever of Maya's many texturing tools you plan to use. There are a thousand ways to create any one texture.
So what is it you're really trying to ask? "How to texture" is way too broad a subject to answer. We'd need to write a whole textbook just to get started. Let's narrow it down. Do you want to know how to apply a pre-existing texture to the surface? Or how to paint a texture onto the surface with Maya's painting tools? Or how to generate a particular type of texture procedurally? Or how to bake lighting and other effects into a texture? Or how to understand the surface shape well enough that you can paint a texture in Photoshop and have it fit the model? Something else? You'll need to be a bit more specific.

3D Paint Tool

ciao Chosen yes sorry i've been not clear, what i would do is to paint a texture onto the surface with Maya's painting tools, i think that's the way all use to texture amazing 3d objects no? i do those steps, make a sphere for exemple, i select all the sphere, then assing new material like phong for exemple, i can edit the color and i can choose a texture from the Maya's list, leather is ok for a boot. now what i would do is to mark the texture using the 3d paint tool but when i use the brush it says // Warning: Some surfaces have no file texture assigned to the current attribute. i don't have a clue about what i'm doing that's the point lol thanks for all your help i can model some cool shape now never tought to have that improvement ty!! :****

From: valentine Biddle i think that's the way all use to texture amazing 3d objects no? Actually no, most texturing is done by creating the texture images in Photoshop and applying them to the model in the 3D app, not by painting directly onto the model. Not to say that learning how to use Maya's 3D paint tool is a bad idea, but I do want to make sure you aren't misled on this point. From the question you asked, I would suggest you should maybe start by simply loading a few images (ie. some photos or something, not the textures built into Maya) into your materials and seeing how they look when applied to objects. This won't look even remotely like what you'd want, but will start to give you a sense for how texture images relate to the three-dimensional forms.
