Hi!

I'm new to building, but very familiar with computers and CAD programs.

One action that I can't figure out is aligning an object. That is, I want a particular edge of an object to meet an edge or plane of another object. How do I make that happen?

This action is useful simply to make two objects meet; how do I rest my furniture on the groud, or move one bookcase next to the other? When building, how do I make one piece meet another piece?

I know I can carefully "do the math", isn't there an automated way to make one edge meet another?

Hi Lisa :) I'm not aware of an automated way to make the edge of one object meet the edge of another. There is, however, an automated way to do this when you're creating prims. What you do is:

-- create a prim and keep it selected,
-- return to the Create window (the cursor will change into a wand),
-- check the Copy Selection checkbox (you can skip this step but the results will be a little different - try it and see),
-- and click on one of the sides of the prim.

An identical prim will be created right next to the first prim, their sides butting against each other. Then you can go to the Object tab and use Building Block Type and the other parameters to change the new prim to whatever you want it to be.

Skidz Primz is one cool way of doing that. There may be other products. Do a lookup on slexchange.com or in-game. Good luck. :)

Thanks, Emily, I'll have to try that.

Thanks, Kharis. I will see if I can find that product.

There is another method for aligning prims. I use Prim Docker which comes in the form of a HUD and pretty easy to use. It's also on SL Exchange and can be found in the in-game classifieds.
