Sculptmap image resolutions

Just curious what image resolution folks are using for their sculpties. Is there any benefit to using a sculptmap image that is larger than 32x32 pixels?

I know that some people have been using larger sculptmaps to try and compensate for the lossy JPG compression, but is there any other reason to use a 64x64 or larger image?

I've had good results with 32x32 images. Most of my shape are organic and bumpy so I have not worried too much about the compression artifacts.

There's a very good reason to use a 64x64 map, in that a 32x32 map cannot represent the maximum possible number of vertices in a sculpted prim. If you don't care about losing a row of vertices and 1/32 of your texture map, it may not matter to you; however the texture edge will pop back in at lower LOD resolutions, which can look a bit odd.

That said a lot of sculpty tools aren't generating full resolution meshes anyway; so there would be no benefit unless your tool took advantage of that.

ahh. Very interesting. I will have to explore this a bit and see how much of a difference it makes with the sculptmaps I am creating. Thanks for the info. :)

You can use my uv texture to check your sculpties...

What usually happens if say you're modelling with a 32x32 mesh or a tool that exports a 32x32 mesh, is that you won't see the top red bar of the texture when applied. When you back away, the red bar will pop back into view.

It can for Toroidal stitching.

In fact, the default Spherical stitching only really requires a 32x64. Ditto for Cylindrical. Only a Planar sculpty actually "requires" 64x64.

thus the phrasing "maximum possible" :)
