Hi, I help in making items like tables, chairs, ornaments etc for -existing- buildings in a sim. It can be a pain in the ..rear end to model someting to a tight fit in buildings that is not aligned with the -words- coordinates. (eg the buildings have been rotated in order to present them self best in respect to the landscape). Is it somehow posible to alter the coordinates so they align with a chosen 'baseobject' (like a building) and then have a mutch simpler task fitting in the new items.

The reference ruler is your friend. First, make sure Use Grid is turned on in the editor. Then select the object you want to align with, and press shift-G (with chat closed). The ruler's rotation will turn to align with the object, and its units will change to be multiples of the object's size, in all three dimensions.
Remember, mastering all three ruler modes is an absolutely essential part of learning to build effectively in SL. Take some time to learn the ins and outs of the rulers.

It's not in a menu; it's in the editor. That's why I said "make sure Use Grid is turned on in the editor".

hah I didn't realize (after 5 years here!) that you could SET your reference frame.. never saw any good in the reference ruler before now.... bloody hell... and out of curiosity is the reference to single prim, or single object?

If it makes you feel any better, Void, I didn't know how to use it either until someone showed me. Go, go, SL documentation, right?
To answer your question, it's object-based. So if you've got the infamous local rotation bug, it will affect it. Also, if you try to use it with Edit Linked Parts turned on, it tends to freak out. If you want to reference a single prim from a linkset, unlink that prim first. Relinking it will kill the reference, so you'll need to leave it unlinked until you're done.
