Ok .. I am working on this mamoth castle for a client and getting paid pretty well too. But I am relatively new to land ownership, only own land in Anshe's dreamland, which is a bit different than owning land on the Mainland, when it comes to selling land with items that preside on it.
Comes time to link everything together and hand over to new ower. I do all the rights as I build, so everything is duly set as an original and for sale for zero as individual pieces. Go to link, and its just too big. Oh well, expected that. Try to link in clumps .. says I can't ... objects are too far away from each other. Try different angles .. no go. At least I have a snow hill for a backdrop so I am not grabbing everyone's else prims in the selection process, BUT I still can't do this in any reasonable time frame and without having my client spend hours, if no days buying their build clump by tiny clump. and if they want to move it later? WHAT A NIGHTMARE and it'll be on ME to make it happen.
So, we decide to do a simple 2 minute timed land exchange, not realizing this will cost me $40 USD!!! in tier. There goes my profit margin. I think about canceling, but the owner is afraid the land will go back to Linden Labs and she'll have to buy it over. I agree that its not clear to whom the land would go to if the buy was cancelled. I go through and confirm and, yes, this month instead of a $9.95 monthly membership fee I have a $49.95 bill for owning my client's land for two minutes so she could own the castle she paid me for!!!!! OUCH! Talk about losing money!
For those of us who do custom builds on extremely difficult terrian, it is not viable to do a transfer and ask the client to move it into place. It is also bad business to make the owner spend as much time getting possession of their build, via selling clumps, as it is for me to design and build the sucker. Kinda takes away the incentive of hiring someone like me to do builds.
Why can't SL add a feature to land sales that allows for a a custom build to be transferred without selling the land back and forth? JUST THE OBjECTS on the land that have my ID on them sold to the owner. Then, if she decides to move she could do one sale for the house and one for the land. If the new owners wanted to keep the build, great ... its where it needs to be and they can edit cause it goes in their name. If they don't like it but love the land, great. They do mass select and delete the whole thing. Or sell it to someone else who uses mass select without link, but then your back to ownership issues of the individual prims. *sigh*
Some might ask why not use Group Deed process. Well, we asked Satu about that. She is reknown for moving whole cities and such, but she said it doesn't always work, and if you have a lot of members/officers in your group, then you run a risk of losing the land and the build to a greedy officer. This is silly. There has got to be a better way to do this.
HELP!!!!

There is a better way: the permission system has been known to be badly broken and has been so for a long time. I don't know that anyone has yet discussed one that would satisfy all the competing needs, and I know that it would take massive coding effort to fix it if someone did come up with a rational system.
I do think though that you have very legitimate grounds for asking Linden Lab to waive that $40 charge that you incurred through grave, acknowledged limitations of SL. Your best bet is to write billing@secondlife.com but it seems that calling Linden Lab and talking to them is more efficient than any other approach.
Good luck; sorry that this happened to you.

been there many times

I have done this sooo many times when making houses, gardens, estates, waterfals, and other builds - it is the worst part of the job, the HANDOVER of prims to your client.
All sorts of things happen
- you forget one or two prims buried under others which you later cannot reach to set to sale without moving a build or a section
- you have a nervous client who doesnt listen to the procedure and buys the object(s) off you before you set perms or price properly or then buys it and accidentally moves it or deletes it or takes it while clicked on it
- you cannot link some sections and forget objects and cant find where they are yet the land tools show you still have objects there
This part of the job is the longest in a great large build. I had not that long ago a handover of prims in excess of 8000 over a huge distance and i also have had many complex gardens of 5000- 20,000m sizes
There is no current easy way really and no specific transfer tools. I would like to see a command that allowed me to say ' sell all objects belonging to ( Snakekiss Noir) on this parcel to... ( avatar) and set permissions as follows..... ( choices)' .
Also I have had several occasions where I have built entire estates and the client has stupidly gone and forgotten what im doing and set auto delete on the land while the build isnt transferred...
I follow certain rules now:
1. Name all objects, there is nothing worse than having a flood of ' object' come back and trying to re do a build
2. Copy all unique objects BEFORE linking into sections as you can then COPY all linked sections as back up BEFORE handing over
3. Name all sections logically
4. TRY to make also one complete copy of the build if you can by hovering high over the object selecting it with the drag and drop yellow square on the land drawing a box around it and selecting copy which makes a COMPLETE copy in your inventory.
Unfortunately this copy is usually always NO modify no copy object and isnt any use again until rezzed. Thers is NO way I THINK to highlight the entire area and set that total object for sale.
ALSO i want to see a set for sale to (named avatar) on any object the same as with LAND. there is nothing worse than to be working your way round a huge build with a client and setting objects for sale and have some griefer gfly in and buy them as originals while you are OPEN sale for $0 !!!!
Also if a client crashes during the handover you cannot continue to set objects for sale for them to pick up later as ANYONE can walk in and buy them for free.
THE entire system of prim transfer and sale needs a serious overhaul and anyone who builds or landscapes is beset by these problems.
ALSO in the wheel Take Copy should be replaced by Make Copy or just COPY.... i have lost count of the number of times i have almost mistaken the 'Take Copy' command for ' Take' when tired or rushed... LL please take out the ' Take' from the Take Copy command so they are totally different. It's so easy to do the wrong one.

UGH! Sounds like ...

I have a ton of work ahead of me. that just sucks. What about this idea? what if I created a special group for eachbuild and "shared" the build with them after it was paid for? My client's trust me not to rip them off, so i think, if it allowed them to move objects and such and change textures as desired, this might be a good alternative?

i have only done a few custom builds but i would have to agree the methood of transfer is a little crude I have gotten in the habit of linking my work in sections AS I GO instead of waiting untill i am done. Another good thing I have learned to do is on builds in general is put each sections root prims' X Y Z coordinates (even its rotations if need be) into its description line. Then take copies of it. If a section is lost, damaged etc you can just rez a new one and enter the numbers asnd its perfectly aligned again. Do this witha ll the peices and you can reassemble entire estates quickly and easily.
