Newbie Mistake? No Mod/No Copy?

I've read and believe I understand about permissions. I purchased my first no mod/no copy object with several prims linked together. Conceptually, to me anyway, I thought that meant that I would not be able to modify it in any way. Knowing this, I simply wanted to add my own prim with a movement script. I thought that linking my own scripted prim to the purchased object might allow me to touch my own prim and move the purchased object. My prim worked fine, but when I linked them all together it didn't work... OK another idea shot - but then I unlinked so I could remove my own prim and POOF - the purchased object was destroyed. All the prims in the purchased object were unlinked - and the no mod restriction would not let me link them back together (even though it obviously let me UNlink them and link my own prim in the first place). I tried to put things back together in several different ways, but ultimately I simply had to repurchase the object. Did I do something wrong? Was it built poorly in the first place? I'm hoping to get into building, scripting, and animating pretty heavily so if anyone can can help me understand what went on here I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

That would be broken because of an unfortunate SL bug.

Since the item/prims is/are transferrable, try dropping it/them back to the creator with an im that you would appreciate a replacement. He/she should hopefully oblige.

They dont always, When I bought my first house (L$1500!!!) and did exactly the same thing. As it was a linked object, the creator had not bothered naming any parts either, so each piece was just named "object". I contacted the creator and was told that I would have to repurchase it as I had unlinked it (no mod/no copy) hmmmm

Ouch! That's just rude. It's not like they had to rebuild the **** thing. It's as bad as exploiting a bug to break the SL rules. Really worse because it's a person they're messin' with! Oh well - I'd already planned to chalk it up to experience so I'm calling it a write off. At least mine was only L$600. That really is a nasty bug since it defies common sense - My guess is that most newbies make the same mistake at some point.

When you buy a house, try to find one with copy/mod perms. You would not normally want to sell it so you really don't want transfer perms.

That way if anything goes wrong, you delete it and rez a new one!

I sell my stuff that way too.

I sell my homes mod/no copy/ trans, but if there is a problem within the first month i am generally very helpful. With that being said, i have had many clients unlink entire homes (500 prims +) when trying to change a wall color for example, then lash at me as if it were my fault. Most of the time i tell them to pack it back in the box and sell it back to me for 0L. Then i sell them a replacement for 0 L and delete the problem one.

My point is, if you try being nice to them and they are rude in return - they hopefully wont be in buisness long. Those of us who make this game a buisness most likely will go the extra mile to protect a good reputation.

I am so glad to hear that vendors exist who think like you both do. I want to be a vendor someday and I plan on doing just that. I always look for mod/copy if I can find it. It doesn't seem to me, so far, that a preponderance of vendors share your view. I can understand not wanting custom developed scripts to be seen, but I can't for the life of me understand why you wouldn't want to allow someone to change the color of their upholstery! 8)

I would really appreciate it if items including scripts were offered with mod for a premium price. I would gladly pay extra for their work. I've been writing code for more years than I care to admit in RL! I understand what it takes and am willing to pay for the ability to tweak things a bit, add my own supplemental functionality, and learn from their efforts.

Thanks for the replies!
