The OBJ versions should work in almost any 3D modeling program, Blender included. The Poser files will only work with Poser or DAZ|Studio. Make sure you're opening the right files.

The official SL models do work in Blender. Just import them as .obj. You may need to scale them up to see them properly after they have been imported.
If you cant get them to import, send me an IM inworld with your email address and Ill send you a copy of them in a .blend file.

From: Jamay Greene If you cant get them to import, send me an IM inworld with your email address and Ill send you a copy of them in a .blend file. That's generous of you, Jamay. If I might make a suggestion, how about posting the file here, so any other Blender users who may be having trouble can grab it? If you zip the file, you'll be able to attach it to a post.

Not a bad idea. Male and female avatars with UV mapping and materials in a .blend file

From: Ennio Balczo I user the files from this post, and I create my own avatar, and I would like to know how can I use it in SL? That depends on what changes you have made to the base avatar. If you have altered the mesh then you are out of luck. If you have made textures for it, just bake them and upload like a normal texture.
