K I am experimenting with rebuilding real world amusement park attractions lately. Is there some way to create a hinge or pivot? I have tried everything, from ball & sockets, to literal hinges. All built and then set to physical. They move properly for a few seconds then fly apart. Is there something I am missing, or is the grid just not capable or this sort of build?

Not capable...

Physics in SL, even with the new Havok 4 engine in place is not that precise. Why does your hinge have to be physical? Perhaps explore a non-physical solution. a simple door script might be the best place to start, those are non physical, have a hinge prim, and work fine.

SL had physical hinges years ago, sort of primitive skeletal systems. They never worked properly, so eventually they were axed.
Anyway, Atom, I'd go with Joahn's suggestion. A non-physical scripted solution is the only thing that will work accurately and reliably.

Havok4 uses finite elements of 0.01 m, it only uses approximations of gravitational laws down to some inertia for simplified rigid bodies while completely ignoring strong and weak nuclear forces.
With a lever or many objects in a bucket you can get a lot of force at a single point, especially when it adds up due to time dilation. With enough force applied you can push a solid object trough a 3 meter thick wall because inaccuracies can add up that much and because theres no nuclear force to prevent this.

A hybrid solution is to use physics for whatever motion is wanted, but also periodically reset things to where they belong.

Thankfully. The last thing I want in SL is beta radiation poisoning, or nuclear fusion! (I want it in RL, not SL! Well, nuclear fusion that is... of course I do NOT want beta irradiation IRL ;P) Simulation of electromagnetism would be nice though...
