does anyone know about these sandboxes on public property??
whats the dealio on building your own place just can't own the land??
anyone also where there is land to build on free?

That's just how LL runs things. You'll need to upgrade to a premium account if you want to own your own land. Anyway, if you're looking for a place to build for free, you can go to the sandboxes. As far as I know, they have no prim limits, you you can make whatever you want, with as many prims as you want. The only thing you can't do is leave your creation there, as it will most likely be deleted by the land owner at the end of the day. (That's the case with most sandboxes anyway.)

Sandboxes are property where the owner (LL for some of them) has given everyone permission to build freely on their land. There are a number of sandboxes around SL. The biggest are listed in the Worldmap, since they are comprised of entire sims.

Most of the Public sandboxes are wiped clean every so often (Anywhere from once a day to once an hour to every fifteen minutes, depending on the owners' preferences.), so these are not good places to put long term structures.

As for buildding long term structures, a citizen with a basic account cannot own land. THus, people with Basic accounts are limited to renting property from those who CAN own land. The landlord would charge a weekly or monthly rental fee in exchange for the right to occupy a given parcel of land. Prim limits would be set (Some Landlords actually offer enhanced prim limits to their tenants, because they can afford to, making rental appear more enticing than owning, even to Premium account holders.)

At this time, I do not know of ANY land that can be occupied for free, by Basic Citizens nor Premium. All land has to be owned by someone. If you are not Governor Linden, then you had to buy that land and very likely are paying tier fees every month for the privilege of "owning" space on the server... If I had to pay tier fees for a piece of land I won (I do), I am not going to be likely to give access to that land away for free; I would charge at least the proportion of the tier fees to cover that piece of land to a renter.

NOTE: If you are a Premium account citizen, there is a program called "First Land" whereby you can purchase land for L$1/m^2. The First Land plots are only 512m^2 and only allow 117 prims, but it is better than nothing. Also, you do not pay tier fees ont he forst 512m^2 of land you own. That is a the right of every citizen to own free and clear.

All sandboxes have prim limits, the linden owned sim wide ones are 15,000 prims, minus a few for signs etc that stay there..

I haven't ever found a sandbox that didn't clear on a regular basis, so you can't really build and live in a house there..

There are some free apartments in some places for basic accounts, and you can furnish it, but not build the apartment yourself..

You can also rent land with L$ or US$, which means you don't need a premium account, but you can do everything you can do with land..

so informative you are...so i can basically rent land and build on it? Or i just pay rent on built property and land space?
i was wanting to just give it try...building that is and there is alwasy soemthing to learn in sl...

Yeah, You can rent land, and build on it, or rent property, and furnish it..

You can build in sandboxes, and take the finished result into your inventory, but if you leave it out, it will be wiped.

There are a growing number of "private" sandboxes owned... such as Anshe Chung's Mature Sandbox and the TLC area in Mauve and the Obscure Sandbox.

Wanna find more? Use ROAM REGIONS, it shows some ones that don't even show up in the SL Find.

Some of them have different rules... always obey local customs hehehe and happy building!

If you just want to have fun and try it out, go for one of the public sandboxes like Cordova(?). You should have plenty of time and space to build, and you can always pick up your builds and lay them back out the next day.
