Has anyone found a 3d modeller package that works similarly enough to SL's modeller that you could prototype designs offline? I'd love to be able to work on building designs when I'm in locations without internet access, but since I'm still new to SL's building format, it's hard for me to sketch or draft objects and know exactly how I'd put them together in-world. I guess once I've got a better handle on the options for manipulating prims, that'll get easier, but for now, software for use offline would be really handy.

I'm working on it for Blender. Friend of mine may be working on a version for MEL. Mine is aimed to be open source and freeware as soon as I can get it done.

Second Life prims are supposedly based on Open Inventor, which I am told is not actually free. There are other primitive software apps, but they're likely not advanced enough for prototyping offline.

have you looked at povray? It's script-based, similar to the scripting here. You might be able to convert a povray file and use it to build here.

Has anybody actually written a POVRay to Second Life converter, though? Also it appears that POVRay supports a LOT more types of primitives than Second Life (not to mention that POVRay SDL is easier to work with than the SL build mode (at least once you're used to it)).
