Security - is this feasable

I have a room that I only want people on an access list to enter. While I appreciate we can't keep cameras out and we can put locks on doors and group/access sit on poseballs - can I fill the room with an invisable prim that becomes phantom whenever anyone in the access group enters and solid when they leave - would this affect any poseball within the room? Could someone still enter the room (ie. LandMark to the centre of the solid prim?

Just a thought

Tarak:)

You dont need the phatom invisible prim deal, although that would work, all you need to do is go into about land, and to the right, there's two tabs.. access and ban. Simply fill the access tab with the names of those whom you want to have access. All others will get a no entry barrier, and although they can pan in with the cam, they cant sit a poseball or anything like that to enter. "lockable doors" are a joke, just panning your view in and sitting on something will pass you through the wall as if it wasnt there. Use the access list. Beyond that, "true" (notice the quotes) security would require an island, where, again, you could setup an access list, and only lindens (visible ones or not), could enter your land, which is fairly unlikely for the most part as they're generally busy doing their jobs.

Access ban and the "No Entry" field (barrier) is anti-social and paranoic - they can spoil a region and really destroy the fun - like having razor wire. Obviously there is some need at times.

The other thing is that this is a room so I want to ban from an XYZ perspective to a limited and constanly varying collection of people - not a 'Group' as such.

Thanks for your advice.

Another thought is there a scanner script that scans all 3 axis? (XYZ) If so this could be associated with a access list.

would a basic password work for you. IE having the users use something like /12345 mypassword to make it phantom. then just make it non-phantom as x amount of time OR to just keep it simple a filtered/case collision strip that makes the door non-phantom after that person walks across it.

The phantom/solid prim toggle is an interesting idea, but I wouldn't recommend it. It could interfere with camera movement, which would be really annoying. If that's the route you want to go, you'd be better off having the prim change size, similar to how Rent-O-Matic booths work. To allow entry, the prim scales down to .01x.01x.01, turns phantom, and turns invisible, so the chances of it getting in anyone's way are very slim. To disallow entry, it turns solid, visible, and fills the room. It's not hard to set something like that up.

However, it's not entirely effective security. All someone needs to do is sit on a cube, and they can slide it inside. If they get off the cube, they'll be pushed to the outside of the large, solid prim filling the room, but as long as they stay seated, they could be in there all day. Also, whenever an allowed person is in the room, there's nothing to stop a disallowed person from following him in.

What you want is a security orb. They work really well if you buy a good one (or if you're a good enough scripter to make one). They'll block entry within any radius you specify, up to about a hundred meters or so from the orb itself, whether the offending avatar is standing or sitting.

For your situation, you'd want to set the orb's scan radius to roughly the size of the room, and give it a list of allowed people. Anyone not on the list would receive a verbal warning from the orb, and a gentle push back if they get too close. For extreme offenders, you could even set the orb to teleport them home if they come anywhere near the place. (Be careful with that option though; use it only for the small number of people who may deserve it, or be prepared for abuse reports to fly all over Linden Lab about you.)

Search the classifieds for "security orb" and you'll find lots to choose from.

Good point about the movement Chosen, I agree, a security orb is probably the best solution for his situation considering he doesnt want to use the no entry barrier.

And, Tarak, I actually agree with you about the no entry barrier... they suck. One thing though, at about 100 meters they cease to exist, so when flying long distances, any altitude above that is clean sailing.
