I'm a noob in SL, but when it comes to 3D modeling I have some expierence. With Swift 3D and 3D studio MAX.

I saw someone made it possible to import objects from Blender into SL. I dont know nothing about Blender but I also saw it was possible to import your 3D studio max objects into blender.

Does that mean I can import my 3D studio Max objects into blender and from there on into SL?

Hope one of you knows the answer and can help a noob out.

Kind Regards,

Well, i tried the Blender way.
It works like this : run a (Python) plugin in Blender and make Prims.
(almost like in SL, but you get a decent view of the Objects and
a fast user Interface, Blender rocks)
Use the plugin to export your Prims in a special File Format.
Copy and Paste it into a Notecard. Run a special script to have the Prims
built in SL. Slow. Very Slow.

Exporting from Max ? Existing Objects ?
The only way to do this would be to convert everything into triangles
and have each triangle Rezzed in SL as a Prim.
The Result ? an insane Prim count. Almost Useless.
AFAIK there is an .obj importer somewhere...
EDIT: here
but Prims are expensive, even if you attach them to your Avatar.

The only way to go is : learn to build in SL

...and hope LL gives us a way to import 'real' 3D Objects.
Prims are a nice Toy to Play with, but its not the Way to build
detailed, exact, efficient 3D Objects for a realtime Engine.

Thanks mate,

Too bad I cant use my 3D Max objects. I guess I'll just use the blender prim thingy.

Thanks a lot for your time.

Can I hijack this thread? I don't think it's worth its own...

Is there any 'quick solution' to recreating a SL build in 3DS Max, other than copying the scale and coordinates of every individual prim? I have a feeling the answer is 'no', but it's worth a shot :) Cheers.

Re-hijack.

The Blender portion works, as far as I know. If it doesn't, send me an IM with what's broken and I'll fix it immediately. :)

The importer for the files the tool creates, however, is a bit wonky. The libsecondlife folks seemed to have a working replacement, but I haven't heard news of it for some time. Thraxis Epsilon's importer seems to be the only public one at the moment, and since it's written in LSL, "slow" is an understatement.

And yes, I've been trying to get LL to roll out offline building for years now. :p

If you're going to 3DSMax, you could try OGLE to pull your build straight from SL. I won't link it because of some of its "other" uses, but as a legitimate tool, it should do the trick nicely.

Oh wow, thanks for the replies, that's good to know. I wish I'd seen them before I spent yesterday building the damn thing from scratch, but hey, at least I learnt how to build in Max now!

Anyway, that's really good news. I guess I had to learn anyway, so now that's out the way I can take the shortcut next time.
