How do I change the "primary" prim in a group?

Hi folks,

I have a small problem... I built a train in SL and want it to have a text above it... It only consists of some simple prims gouped together. The script also is no problem...

But when I grouped the prims, one of the train's wheels became the "primary prim" of the group... Now the text is displayed above the wheel and more or less inside the train... That's not how I supposed it to be :) How can I alter the primary prim so that one of the upper prims holds the text? Can I ungroup prims? How is the primary prim of a group determined? Order of selection?

Thanks in advance!

unlink and relink, choosing the one you want to be primary very last. (IF using drag to select, just shift+click to deselect, then again to reselect. When you link, it uses the last selected object as the primary or 'paren
And to ungroup, hit shift+ctrl+l

To link, or group, hit ctrl+l

I'm assuming its an american qwerty keyboard for windows anyway.. otherwise its different

First, depending on how complex your linkset may be do not follow the previous example of unlink then relink, thats is IMHO very bad advice as it can be very time consuming to try and relink all parts when you have the option of unlinking individual prims or more and obviously the whole linkset.

In your case you only want to unlink 2 prims and change which one will be the Root or Parent Prim.

The simplest and quickest option (I think) will be using the edit menu, At the top of your edit menu select "Edit Linked Parts" then put your mouse pointer over the prim you want to unlink, left click the prim and from the tools menu on the top of your screen select unlink. To make sure you only have 1 prim prior to unlinking you can check this from your edit menu under the general Tab.
After unlinking then follow the same process for the one you want to be the Parent or Root Prim.

Now you will have a linkset and 2 unlinked prims.

Select your single prim that you do not want to be your Root Prim and holding down the Alt key select your linkset, then from the Tools menu select Link. the next step will be to select your Linkset first then select your single prim that you want as the Root prim and again from the tools menu select link.

You should now have 1 linkset with the correct Root Prim..

Yeah, I didnt have the time earlier for that explanation of single prim unlink/relink and such... sorry =/ But I was already typing that one when I got the call... so oh wlel.. But yeah, complex objects, that method is much better

Even easier, just move the script to the prim you want it displayed above, using "edit individual prims" or whatever that radio button's called. That way, if you have something already going on with regards to placement of the train based upon that wheel being the root prim, you don't have to change anything else.

You'll have to edit the script in the wheel to delete anything between the quote marks (it persists even if the script is deleted) then put the floating text script in the appropriate prim.
