Assuming your using a PC .. Middle click and drag the icon to the little waste backet on the far rigtht of the shelf.

To add custom tools to your shelf .. press and hold alt + ctrl + shift .. then select anything from from the menu's and as soon as you click it will be added as a shelf item.

Sorry I have no Mac experience .. Good luck.

If you want greater control, use the Shelf Editor (Window -> Settings/Preferences -> Shelf Editor. The controls are pretty self explanatory:

1. To select and/pr edit an entire shelf, click on it in the Shelves tab.

2. To select and/or edit an individual button, first select the appropriate shelf on the Shelves tab, then go to the Shelf Contents tab and select the item.

3. To change the function of an existing button, select it on the the Shelf Contents tab and then go to the Edit Commands tab. You'll see the MEL script for the button written out, and you can edit it as you see fit.

Note that ALL the buttons in Maya's interface are simply shortcuts to MEL scripts. That includes both custom buttons you've added and default buttons that were already there. You can edit any or all of them as you see fit. Obviously this gives you tremendous power, both to enhance Maya and to FUBAR it. So tred carefully.

It's a good idea to keep a backup of your shelves folder (and all your preferences folders for that matter). You'll find it in My Documents\Maya\(verison number)\prefs.

Hahaha.

Anyway, yeah, so you know, when it comes to moving things functionally in Maya, the middle mouse button is the way to go. For example, to apply a texture to a shader in the hypershade, you middle-drag one onto the other. To unparent one item from another in the hypergraph, you middle-drag it out from underneath. To change a value in the channel box, you can either type in an exact number if you already know what number you want, or you can simply select the channel and middle-drag left or right to increase or decrease the value fluidly.

Maya is designed to take full advantage of a 3-button mouse in a way that almost no other program comes close to. This behavior is not immediately obvious, of course, since it's unusual, but once the logic gets in you, it makes a whole lot of sense. Knowing what to drag with what button for what purpose becomes second nature. You just do it without thinking.

In fact, once you do absorb the logic, you'll undoubtedly find yourself trying to use the mouse Maya-style in all kinds of other programs. It's actually sort of a recurring joke among students of Maya. "Hey, I was just using Word, and I tried to alt-drag to rotate the page. I'm such an idiot. Hahaha." It happens all the time. My original 3D teacher put it like this, "Once you've been exposed to this example of how a computer SHOULD work, your instinct is to want to use it that way all the time".
