So I have started created .RAW terrain height maps and would like to ultimately sell them, but I do not own an island. I have used hand painted bitmaps that I then put in Bailiwick a program that creates .RAW files. I chose the water level, multipliers, etc. so I don't think there would be any problems with the files that are put out, but I can't be sure and I don't want to sell a bad product. I can't afford an island right now so buying one isn't an option. Any suggestions? I'd be willing to give away the .RAW file to any one who would let me test it and take pictures of it on their island, but I'm wondering if there is another way. If not, is anyone interested?

ABSOLUTLY. Get a sim you can run on your own computer at opensim.com You can load your terrain maps into it and assure yourself that you have a good product to sell.

Linden water (with rare exceptions) is fixed at 20 meters

I have also used the height map from raw files to preview them in Bryce. It is not exact but it definitely gives you a good picture of how it will look.

From: Dekka Raymaker Linden water (with rare exceptions) is fixed at 20 meters Not true. If you're capable of changing the sim .RAW file, you're capable of changing water height. It can be up to 100m I believe. 20m is the mainland sim water level, and the default level on new sims. Changeable in the estate options, rather easily.

Yes, but if your sim is adjacent to any other sims at all, setting your water level to anything other than 20 results in a severe disconnect at the sim edge, where your water "stops" abruptly and the water level in the adjoining sim starts. While I suppose that a sim that is completely disconnected from the other sims, or only touches sims that you own, may be able to successfully use other values, 20 is pretty much it if you have neighboring sims.

I think, actually, even isolated sims still have the drop off. The void water is at 20m. But you can still manage. Not everyone goes to the edges and looks (I know I don't) and not everyone cares. you can have the edges look like 'mounds of land' and hide i a bit, or have walls, or any number of things. Just because it's not connected aesthetically doesn't make it impossible. Just means it'll look a tad awkward to some.

OpenSim may be too advanced for me. I know some computer programming, but I can't even get through the first step...

I downloaded OpenLife and got that running. I just uploaded my .RAW file and it told me it may take two minutes, so we'll see whether or not it works!
