prims becoming phantom on their own

I have been attempting to create a new skybox since my other one would become phantom in some areas (not others )on its own all of a sudden and I would fall through the floor, yet the phantom box was not checked in edit, and I couldnt stop it from happening , and I could not hit upon a way to fix it, so I deleted it. Now my neighbor had the same problem the other day in his skybox too and it went away on its own. What is causing it and how do you fix it? Anyone know? Thanks.

PS It seems to happen after editing or making some changes .

Back in the day builders called this sort of thing 'prim rot' I'm not sure what causes it and I had never had it happen before in all my time in SL until a few weeks ago when I went upstairs in my new house I made and I fell down to the bottom floor for no apparent reason. The funny thing is, it was only part of the prim that had the issue, like the one corner. I was going to replace it but ended up forgetting about it and it's fine now, go figure.

Well not having met that problem exactly I'm not sure.
But you could request a region restart. That solves non-visible, non-selectable prims. But you know when you hit those :P
Would be interested to know if this is a new SL bug. Perhaps the region is so laggy that the physics engine doesn't tell you you're standing on a floor?
Go on. Whack it in the JIRA :) It doesn't help but it makes you feel better!

I had this happen. Fell straight through the kitchen floor one morning. I tried duplicating the prim, which has been known to work, but ultimately had to create an entirely new one. Not a big deal for a simple floor. Glad it wasn't something more complex!

Same thing with me only part of the prim had the problem :) and I went and deleted my skybox over it . Didnt help, the new one I started to make did it too.

I should ask to restart the sim... who do I ask ? lol

Yes its usually the floor ... or maybe a wall. I think it is a new bug. And its a difficult one when you have a skybox :) .

I've had this problem in the past, was advised that it was because I used one of the floor prims as the root prim. It was actually the root prim that seemed to be phantom in one section. Changed the root prim to a wall, no more falling through the floor.

Thanks ! That makes sense :).

Not sure if this was said...but it usually (used) to happen to me when I'm copy dragging a prim or multiple prims.

Sometimes you have to just recreate the prim again from scratch.

I had this happen last night - one prim in a link set of 3-4 suddenly started acting phantom, even though the others were still solid. No scripts or physics or anything in them - just generic prims.

I thought it was mainly huge prims it happened with . I wonder why it does this?

If anyone has an object that does this reliably then please take it over to the beta grid and try it there. If it still happens then file a bug report in JIRA and get back to us with the JIRA id. I have a feeling that we will never get this fixed under havok1.

--- edit ---

I just located an object of mine that did this and the problem did not occur on the havok4 beta grid. I hope that others can also test this.

This happens periodically to me. It has been around for at least the last year and from some of the comments I'd guess longer than that.

I found out how to fix it without replacing the prim. Just go into build mode, then edit selected item. Change the hollow value on the prim in questions from 0 to some value, then back to 0. It fixes them 100% of the time for me.

When I had one do that once, I removed it, and kept it to try to figure out what had happened. After some testing I realized that it was acting like it was set for maximum hollow. Visually it looked normal, but physically it was 95% hollow.

*edit*
I found this Jira entry for the problem, there may be others that I have not found yet.

I had this happen the other day. Ended up adding a little extra root prim - invisible - to the center of my build.

I edit the prim properties in some way and that has always fixed it when it's happened.

I scripted a 0.01m increase then decrease in Z size as a repair function in builds which works.

No idea. I think I just unlinked then relinked the set and the problem went away. If seems pretty rare (at least for me) but it does happen again, I'll probably bug report it or see if I can corner a Linden in-world to take a look first.
