Hi there, this is my first time posting on the forums. I've only been on SL for a few days so just getting the hang of how everything works. My coworker introduced me to SL and I became instantly hooked with being able to build stuff. So, while at work, I made up a doodle of a house plan.

A couple friends helped me with my design and getting everything layed out. I'm currently using some pretty generic textures, though I plan to create all of my own custom textures.

My initial plan is a three level house with a basement. I originally wanted stairs to wrap around the inside of the big circular window, but both ways I tried, both prims and ramp-style wasn't working out. I didn't want to waste 30-40 prims on stairs and I couldn't get a ramp to fit correctly. Soooo, while looking through different scripts, I came across an elevator script, so I might try that :D It'll make it cleaner, neater, and open up my big window.

The first floor has an outdoor jacuzzi with a dome glass ceiling. Inside will be the kitchen and dining area. The second floor will feature a big screen TV with stereo/movie system as well as a large couch. On one end it has access to a balcony which will be a garden patio. And the third floor is where my bedroom will be with an office/study at one end. I havn't decided what I want in my basement yet.

Oh, the blob on the balcony is me ;o

Hi Jennifer, welcome to SL!

Looks like you are off to a good start. For the elevator, search the scripting forums, and you'll find loads of advice on building an elevator, and what kinds there are to choose from (including teleporters).

I thought about teleporters, but I wanted something physical, not just a spot on the ground. I want people to see the elevator move up and down. ^_^ The only thing now is to make a passcode script for only certain users to access the third floor.

Now i just have to figure out how to make scripts. x-x maybe I can find a nice person to explain some of it to me.

Script-based security is pretty pointless. You can make teh elevator so only your chosen list can use it, and doors the same. But I can still rez a prim somewhere, sit on it, and move that prim into your 'locked' zone.

As long as I have access to a particular (X,Y) coordinate, I have access to the full range of the Z-coordinates at that (X,Y) location.

If you really want to prevent someone getting into a space, the only effective method is to set the land access permissions (subdividing your land as necessary), but that won't be practical if you want the lower floors generally accessible. This still won't prevent anyone looking at what's there.

Only private islands, or buying so much land you can control access to everything within about 120m or so, will actually prevent anyone seeing what you are doing and what is built there.

Jennifer, there is a freebie item called "Elevator in a box' that will allow you to make custom physical elevators - the kind several people can get onto at once, and when the button is pressed or the verbal command given, it goes to another floor, taking all with it. It's available at a lot of the freebie stops. If you can't locate a copy, IM me in world and I will give you one. I can also show you a nice elevator that I built using that system.

The previous poster is correct, however. No 'lock code' or 'locked door' can keep out a person who insists on sneaking into your private spaces. The only thing a locked door or elevator does for you is remove the excuse of "The door was open so I walked in", when someone invades your privacy.

A security orb can prevent access to a designated spherical area. Parcel level ban lists can keep people off your entire parcel. A security orb is the only way to keep people out of a small space in a parcel, while allowing anyone access to the rest of the parcel. But with either one, they can still sit outside your control and maneuver a camera into your private rooms, to watch what is going on.

There is only one true privacy in Second Life. Buy a private island, allow access only to your invited guests, and make it invisible to anyone in another sim who is not on the access list. Anything else is cosmetic, and can be evaded to some degree.

The pass code was more to keep the noobies from walking in whenever they please. Sure people can find other ways of looking in, I didn't want it to be explicitly private, just the show of privacy.

I also bought the land behind my house which means more prims to play with, so i ended up going ahead and making the stairs along the window. :)

If you'd like to check out my house, it's located at Cheonma (224,208)
