I've seen a few refferences to people achieving a reflection effect on their items in SL.
Today I thought a friend's armband was reflecting, but it was just loading and had that effect while loading. So, is there, and how is it achieved... a way to give the illusion of Reflections?

well there was some one creating the effect
by building upside down under the water,
but i would try and take a screenshot of
what you would want reflected then in a paint
program add water effects and flip the image
then create an under water backdrop to place
the reflection image on.

Um, don't want a reflection like that...

This -honestly- reflected back prims from SL, it was like a mirror or at least gaze the impression of it.

Yep... that's the only real way to do reflections with the SL engine right now. Not sure what you saw, but chances are it was something similar.

What I saw was an armband on someone's arm, loading.
There was no way it had a special texture to reflect the prims I was wearing.

It's not unusual for object whose textures have not yet loaded to pick up temporarily the textures of the ground or of other objects around them, or to cause other visual artifacts. Sometimes such artifacts can look like reflections or a whole host of other things. That's not what they are though. It's simply the effect of your computer trying to fill a void with without yet having the required information to do it right.

The only ways to simulate reflections in SL currently, are either to paint them on or else to build a reversed (mirrored) copy of whatever objects you want to be reflected and place the copy behind a semi-transparent surface, as was done so beautifully in Chintatown.
