I've written an editor for sim .raw files called Bailiwick which is designed to make editing of the various channels more intuitive than a generic image editor. It doesn't edit terrain but imports and exports Terragen files and also images as heightfields. It runs on .NET 2.0 and is currently in beta. I'm looking for a few island owners who would be interested in testing it. If you're interested, please contact me at cadroe@spinmass.com. There are screenshots and a manual at my website: http://www.spinmass.com/bailiwick/

Cadroe, you never cease to impress me. I wish I owned an island, so I could play with this new toy. Oh well. I can still tell you you're awesome.

Well, I don't have an island, but I do have some terrain files, if anyone wants to play around with them. Cadroe, based on my experience with Backhoe, here are a few features that seem useful to me... The ability to send the camera down and move around on a scale comparable to SL.
The ability to add a few boxes (mock up buildings) in an SL scale, to see how buildings will look.
The ability to work on multiple regions at a time, such as a 3x3 grid of islands, or a 1x4 row of islands.
Easy export of images to send to reviewers.
Global warming. The sea level increases gradually every time you upload

Lee - Good point about viewing multiple sims - I think I'll actually be folding this into another app for viewing the whole grid. I'm not sure about the other suggestions, only because Bailiwick doesn't have a 3D view. It's not a terrain editor like Backhoe (which is a very cool app). It does import and export to Terragen. Here's an example of a Terragen render of a sim.

Cadroe, I've got a dozen RAW files I've made in BACKHOE on my Mac. If you'd like those to play with, you're welcome to them.
If you'd like to ship me your RAW files, I'll do a BACKHOE screenshot of them in 3D and post it.
And for you Mac enthusiasts, I can't even BEGIN to extoll the wonderful virtues of BACKHOE. Drawing in 3D is a little unnerving at first, but once you get used to it, its fun!

I've received some good feedback through the Bailiwick beta and I've already made some improvements, including three levels of undo, displaying a selected region's area in square meters, and copy and paste between channels. If anyone else is interested in trying it, please contact me at cadroe@spinmass.com. Just to be clear, Bailiwick is not a terrain editor. It's designed to make editing the various channels in a raw file more intuitive. You can create terrain in Photoshop or Terragen and then use Bailiwick to easily set up parcels, water height, permissions, terrain scale, etc. Sterling - I don't think I need any additional raw files right now but thanks for the offer.

Hi, I'm using now Bailiwick in conjunction with Leveller, because I couldn't set the scale values properly. I'm importing the terrain files made with Leveller. Works fine, except for a bug in the scale box. It set automatically the scale correct, but if you play with the value, it gives a math exception, if the value is below 1.

Sascha - Thanks for the info (and thanks for telling me about Leveller). If you don't mind, do you think you could send me an e-mail to cadroe@spinmass.com? That way I could ask you some more questions directly. I do appreciate the feedback.
