Hello.
Why dont we do a World Trade Center in a virtual world like Second Life or similar programs but with a dynamic (not static), moving background scenary of the plane krasches, then the fires and the collaps (explosions) of the buildings.
Like a 3D virtual movie of the catastrofy with a time line through the event.

Then make it possible for people who experienced the event to log in with his own virtual person before it happens and walk around in the event as they did in reallity 9/11 2001 and show people where they were when they saw something. They stop the time and set a marker on the position and time that they witness something and then write, set up pictures and videos that they have.
Then they start the time again and walk, drive and so on to the next place of the disaster where they saw, heard or experienced things, set a marker and set up the information.
Then when thousands of people set up where they where and where they walked, ran or drove a car, people then will be able to see the WTC filled with virtual people who move around in the city and its buildings.
Viewer can then stop the time at any moment of the disaster and zoom in on any place on the street or in a building and read what people experienced at that time by clicking on the person and get the information.

I really want to know where people where in the buildings when they heard explosions and so on.

This would be a open environment so that any whitness can log in and set up theire story. And anybody is allowed to get a copy of the virtual world so they can help build it up with details that is relevant to the catastofic event.
It will all be moderated by people from 911 truth groups and likewise that people trust.
If it all work out the truth will be revealed of what happened but in the virtual world.

It would also be interesting to do other events in history by this way like wars and other disasters and why not social events that people and groups of people have experienced or that historians can build so that people can see what happened in the past, but as a virtual world event.
In this way people can see the event just as they want from any position with any zoom.
If you want to see it all from one person you just follow him through the event or if you want to see it the next time from a fire truck you just follow that one as a invisible flying camera.

Do you want it?

No, I don't want it.

Edit to provide explanation: people do re-enactments of historical battles and such, and everyone has a great time. I've never heard of a re-enactment of anything more recent than the 1860's, though. 9/11 is too recent for a re-enactment to be anything but painful.

I was not at the site, but WAS in NYC that day and have no desire to revisit the events that transpired. That was traumatic enough and stayed with me longer than I had thought it would. Personally speaking, I think most people that have some connection to the events of that date still have intense emotions regarding what happened and the idea seems kind of creepy. IMHO of course.

As someone who witnessed those events from too close a distance, and count among those lost 3 very dear people, reading your post sickens me. What kind of a ghoul are you?

while I understand the desire to pay tribute to life and history changing events, I don't think a reenactment of the event is going to get the reception you're hoping for, especially considering reactions to targeting non-combatants, or disasters that take innocent lives. Also given how fresh in peoples minds it is, and how personally affected some have ben, it's more likely open wounds than to heal them.

I would urge you not to pursue this angle, and when dealing with less recent disasters and such to remove the human element... it's one thing to know about an event, and even the extent of it's destruction.... it's another to watch it up close and personal in peoples eyes as say, Vesuvius rains death and terror on the people around you in Pompei, with no where to hide except cowering in a corner while all existence is buried around you.

I hate to even bump this thread, but I will anyway. Still to this day I can't even watch documentaries about what happened that day. It just makes me too sad and angry. I can't imagine how a virtual world representation would make me feel if I somehow stumbled upon it.

Well said.

I was far away when it happened, and didn't know anyone involved, but still I would not go. It just turns my stomach.

I agree. This has to be the most insensitive idea I have seen anyone propose in SL so far.

Crazy idea

Hey, Magnus. It looks like you have an interest in historically correct SL re-creations in general, not just 9/11. I have an idea for you which you may initially laugh at, but you would get to do the entire gamut of collecting and re-creating builds for oral histories, making a social network, scheduling events, etc. , just like in your 9/11 proposal.

Brace yourself.

Have you heard of Woodstock, the rock concert? This August marks the 40th anniversary of this hippie mecca. No-one would be religious about the exact date (didn't the original concert go on for two weeks or something?). Recreating Yasgur's farm in SL, complete with collapsing sound towers and SL tribute bands, should be very feasible. And I bet folks will come out of the WOODWORK to tell and re-enact their own or other people's stories -- they'll be in their 50's & 60's now, a key demographic for SL.

God knows, there's tons of film from the original event, as well as a LOT of memoirs, that you could use as source material. Use a whole sim. Make the roads leading up to the farm, and encourage re-enactors to find and try to arrive in the same ramshackle cars they originally did. (It will be a disaster, but I bet the original roads were too). In the audience section, leave build on and see what happens. Get a stream, and use the live recordings from the original Woodstock, as well as the 40th anniversary concert, which supposedly will include Jefferson Starship. Be sure to make a good-sized mud pit with mud wrestling anims, and turn a weather system on occasionally to make it rain.

I would like to say yes.... but I happen to know there is(was?) a virtual Hiroshima blast zone build in SL complete with available avatars suffering radiation sickness.... I was less than amused =/

Well I would like to know where people walked around and what they saw and heard from different lokations.

It would be a greate way to gather witness information and the people who identifie them self will naturly be the ones to follow.

I really want to know what people experienced on the way out from the WTC and where they were when it happened.
