Prims inside prims

O, I'm experementing with building. I've played with some items I've purchased, changing textures, color, and linking two together, etc. I'm getting a good idea for the relationship of multiple prims, but I do have one issue.

How do I select a prim that's inside another prim?

Currently, I have to disassemble whatever I'm working on to get at it, and that is just counter-productive.

Thanks for your help. :) I'm sure I'll have other annoying questions later. ;)

Go into edit mode, and drag select just the prim you want without the bounding box completely selecting any other prim. Depending on how small the prim you want to edit is, you may have to zoom in quite a bit. Make sure no other items are selected before you start the bounding box.

If it's part of a linkset, right click on the linkset, select edit, check 'edit linked item' (or something similar), click the ground outside of the item, then do the bounding box (hold down mouse button and drag to select only item within the box) for just that item.

Easy peesy.. :)

Another useful method:

Debug>Rendering>Hide Selected

And then, left click and select the outermost piece(or hold shift to select multiple pieces), if it's linked you will need to have "edit linked parts" checked...

As you click each of your outer parts, they will turn invisible and you'll be able to see the inner piece your trying to reach. As you click(not holding shift at this point if you were before) on your buried/innermost prim, keep in mind that it will turn invisible, so at this point you'll probably want to turn Debug>Rendering>HideSelected back off.

I'll give that a try. I've had bad luck with the bounding box. I never seem to be able to select anything with it :P But I'll give it another go.

If this doesn't work, I guess I could just write down the X,Y,Z coords of the pieces when the object is rezzed IW and take it apart, restoring the coords to reassemble. But that would be such a pain.

Thanks.

The issue isn't SEEING the piece, it's that if any prim is in the way, clicking will select that one, rather than the one I want. And if the prim I want is completely within other prims (Say an invsible particle emitter), I can't get a hold of JUST that one.

I should have clarified, I missed the most important part: In addition to not seeing the already-selected prim(s), you will not click on them; you'll click through them to pieces buried in or behind them. Give it a try, it's a useful feature that really helped me when I figured out about it. :)

To get at a prim(b) inside a prim(a) of linked items, click "edit linked pieces". Then I just select the ouside prim (a), and begin cut (under "object" tab) until I can see/click on the inner prim(b). Select prim(b) then, and do what you want. When finished with prim(b), highlight the outside prim(a) and put your cut back to 0 (or your original cut value).

Additionally, you can drag a box around all the prims to highlight all of them, then hold down shift to unselect all but the piece you want to edit.

Hide Selected

I have no words. Hide Selected has completely revolutionized my building experience.

In addition to getting inside, it's incredible for selecting multiple Linden trees and for making sure that you get everything in a larger build.
